In this intense and gripping scene from the war epic 1917, directed by Sam Mendes, Lance Corporal Schofield (portrayed by the talented George MacKay, known for his role in Captain Fantastic) finds himself in a life-or-death situation as he comes face to face with German soldiers. In a desperate bid for survival, George MacKay's character, Schofield, engages in a brutal hand-to-hand combat with one of the enemy soldiers, ultimately resorting to strangling him to death in a visceral display of the harsh realities of war.

With the threat of capture or death looming over him, Schofield makes a daring escape by jumping into a nearby river, showcasing George MacKay's physical prowess and the character's unwavering determination to complete his mission. The scene is a testament to the film's raw and unflinching portrayal of the horrors of war, as well as George MacKay's ability to convey the emotional and physical toll of combat on the human psyche. 1917, featuring George MacKay's powerful performance, will be available for streaming on Netflix starting June 1, 2024, allowing viewers to experience this harrowing and immersive journey through the trenches of World War I.

What’s the 1917 movie about?
On April 6, 1917, the Germans pretended to abandon their trenches, but in reality, they wanted to surprise the British by waiting for them on the Hindenburg Line. The British are completely oblivious to this, except for General Erinmore (Colin Firth from The King’s Speech and Mamma Mia!). He wants to warn Colonel McKenzie (Benedict Cumberbatch from Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Strange). The offensive must not be launched, or 1,600 men will die. The two soldiers Will Schofield (George MacKay from Captain Fantastic) and Tom Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman from Game of Thrones) are appointed to go and deliver the news. Their journey was not a pleasant one, as they had to cross a no-man's land full of corpses and rats. On the way, Blake is mortally wounded by a German pilot. Schofield had to continue his mission and go to Ecoust to warn the Devon Division. He was escorted by Captain Smith (Mark Strong) but had to finish his journey alone. Passing through the bombs, he alerts McKenzie before it is too late. The Colonel recalls his troops. In the infirmary, Schofield finds Joseph Blake (Richard Madden) to inform him of the death of his brother.

I love how in this movie the soldiers actually look young like they are supposed to. For example this German soldier looks like 18-21 year old while some movies would have made 30 year old to play the role. It adds that cruel realism.

Scho literally gives the german boy second chance, liberates him instead of stealthy killing him, just by telling him to be quiet, and the boy screams anyway, that war coldness is unexplainable for a man.

Thanks to Blake's death Schofield didn't make the same mistake.

Idk why but the scene where schofield is running 1:14 from the Germans just hits me because this would've been someone's grandfather/great grandfather in real life. Sometimes because of all the movies about ww1/2 its easy to think every event is over dramatised and forget the reality events actually happened probably just like this.

German-English Translation

Baumer: English!
German Soldier #2:
Christ, Baumer...this was a mistake. We should go back tonight, maybe no one will notice we've gone. Where's the brandy? You little shit, you better not have run off with it. Baumer. Where is...Baumer? Baumer? Baumer! English! English!

Hope this helps.

I want to think that Baumer is a reference to the main character of the book: all quiet on the western front.

The worst part of this is that Baumer is a boy; he is someone's young son who was forced to fight because he is another body for the cause. Schofield knows that better than anyone - it's why he gives him a chance to live.
But he knows he can't be caught (which he is but by killing Baumer, he's lessening that chance). And the only other option is to kill the boy. Keep in mind, Schofield is early twenties and Baumer is still a teenager; it couldn't have been easy for him to kill someone he would view as a child, despite only being a handful of years apart - especially with all the things he's seen. But that was war back then, still is today.

The continuous shots in this masterpiece are amazing.

Now that's a realistic fight. If this was most directors, these actors would be running up walls and walking away from slow motion explosions.

Thomas Newman's score and Roger Deakins's cinematography never fails to deliver!

0:01 I have the script of 1917 and in this scene, it says "Both eyes meet, terrified, they both know this is to the death"...

Fun Fact: When translated, it heavily implies the German soldiers Schofield encounters had just deserted there units and were considering returning

Love how the boy's name is Baumer.

Plot twist: Baumer is actually Lutz's father, but now he's dead so Lutz and Leyna will never meet.

I loved this movie, the music and how it seemed that the entirety of it was made in 2 or more shots.
