In 1862 the Allegheny Arsenal, one of the nation's largest ammunition factories, exploded. Hundreds of young women perished in the flames, and it stands as the worst civilian disaster of the entire Civil War. As the nation reeled at the horror of the event, it was quickly forgotten when the terrible battle of Antietam began just one day later. Joining us this episode is Senator John Heinz History Center CEO and President Andy Masich and author Jim Wudarczyk.

Thank you! It is sad that the explosion at Arsenal was such a footnote in history, especially since that was the biggest civilian disaster of the war. It ended up being overshadowed by the battle at Sharpsburg, Maryland, which happened on the same day.
