In 1865, during the final phase of the American Civil War, geography maps played a crucial role in strategic planning. Union generals like Ulysses S. Grant relied heavily on detailed maps to navigate the diverse terrains of the Southern states, from dense forests to winding rivers. Accurate maps enabled the Union army to coordinate movements, cut off Confederate supply lines, and capture key locations, ultimately leading to the South's surrender at Appomattox Court House. These maps were indispensable tools that shaped the war's outcome.

"General Sherman is on his way" is not something you want to hear if you're on the opposing side lol.

Wilmer McLean, who had farmed at Manassas Junction in 1861 - left his farm after the first battle to settle with his wife's family at Appomattox - so he could honestly say the US Civil War started in his back yard and ended in his front room!

They surrendered because they were beaten.

The terms of surrender were very gracious. It's humbling to think of it, really. I'm not sure I could have brought myself to be so gracious in victory considering how bloody the war was.

Sherman's goal was to prevent the enemy from making war. He made them understand that war is hell.

its because the Union is just superior in every way. economics, industry, people, and being a legitimate government. there was no way the confederates can win. ever.

After the fall of Vicksburg and the battle of Gettysburg the Civil War was all but over. The south was out of resources and blockades resulted in isolation of divisions that couldnt be maintained long term.

Sadly, the legacy of the Confederacy still exists to this day.

Their generals fought flashy battles rather than thinking strategically, when they had neither the manpower or war material to do so.

Thank you for these 4 episodes. I am from the UK and I have been so ignorant about this period in American history, which somehow still seems relevant to appreciating the state of the US today. Thanks. M

The civil war was lost by the confederacy as soon as it started.
The union was industrialized, had more men and better arms.
The confederacy had better cavalry and better fighters it could be argued, but couldn’t equip or afford the losses the union could.
It should also be noted after stonewall Jackson was killed Lee started losing more troops in battle, because Jackson had an innate sense as to when to disengage

The South should have given up after Gettysburg. Anyone could see that it had become hopeless. This video starts with 1865, January. It was a foolish waste of lives to be still fighting.

As someone who grew up in the South, given all the shared heritage of the US, the choice that some make to focus on and defend the four years of the slavers' failed rebellion as their "heritage" is a deliberate and consciously racist choice. It's "Hate Masquerading as Heritage, " and they ALL know it.

21:00 The first modern war was the Crimean War from 1853 to 1856, whose major battle of Sevastopol strongly resembled the siege of Petersburg ten years later.

2:30 I asked Billy and Joel if they were the ones who started that fire. Their response was, and I quote, "We didn't start the fire".😁

It would be great to see a Downfall movie of the Confederacy.
