In the aftermath of the release of Canadians Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, China continues to insist there was no link with the release of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou.

After over 1,000 days imprisoned in China, the two Michaels were released days ago, just hours after Meng reached a plea deal with the United States, ending her extradition case in British Columbia.

As Abigail Bimman reports, Canada-China relations have a complicated path forward, as concerns over hostage diplomacy remain.

Of course it is complicate. The Chinese now don’t even know where they can find Canadian leader - in Ottawa or in Washington.

John Manley: Canadians should not forget that it was the White House that caused this mess as well.

I remember Jean Chrétien commenting on the US request to detain Meng when in Canada. He said, “Canada should have told the US that we didn’t get the request in time…she left.” And that would have been that.

You do realize that Chinese news agencies do not mention Canada at all. You guys sound like you're more worried about the relationship by constantly reporting on it.

First I heard the term “ hostage diplomacy”. It would be interesting to hear more about why other allied countries didn’t detain Weng during her flights from China .

Lesson learned here. If US asked you to kidnap someone, just don’t kidnap Chinese.

Canada can Beg for permission but cannot make any decisions.

Why is it complicated? Most Canadians (~80%) hold negative views on China. Our leader just needs to act according to people's will.

Canada needs to distance itself from the US. The US wants Huawei's 5G but Canada got sucked in with 2 Michaels. This is stupid

Canada needs an Indian-Canadian PM to deal with China and not a meek person who wears colourful socks.

This must send a message to all Canadians working in the PRC. You are a potential hostage to a thug government,
that constantly lies, and breaks its own signed treaties as in UK /Hong Kong.

There is no independent national policy and there is no independent diplomacy in a country called CANADA. Canada did the bidding for the US, pure and simple, no matter how you say it with gift of gab, and everybody with brain would know that this "detain" act is a act of kidnapping. IT WAS SHAMEFUL AND IT WAS DESPICABLE! So what we can call canada? A independent nation? or just a geographical name on the map? or half independent and half became a running dog of the USA. If pierre trudoru (the father of the current one) alive today, I know for sure he would TWICE slap the face of the current one -- justin! WRIT LARGE

the two Canadian won't be ended up in Chinese prison if it wasn't for US.

It's not that complicated, remember never put our hand in their fight even through we have to side with US, otherwise we get hurt most, just run our mouth is the best choice.

What’s complicated about it? China pulls out the jar of peanut butter and slathers it on while Justin Trudeau comes crawling on his hands and knees.

This should have never lasted as long as it did . I wounder if Trudeau will compensate them for totally abandoning them to a hostile country ? Probable not . They're not terrorists !!
