Yep sometimes on overbooked flights long haul well dressed individuals could be bumped up, the passengers were highlighted at check in with a code and then if necessary bumped up and given a seat change discreetly at the gate. I don’t know if most airlines still do it

Airlines have rules for upgrades. When a flight is overbooked, people who are members of frequent flyer programmes (regular, Silver, Gold, HON) get prioritised. The higher up you are, the better. The price of your ticket is relevant too. There were even more categories, but I can't recall them. A suit might help if it's a toss-up between you and a guy in joggers. It's been a while since I worked in this field.

I got bumped up to business class once when I was flying from South Africa back home to London via Dubai (upgrade was for the Dubai to London stretch with Emirates). I was travelling alone as a 17 year old girl, and wearing a Levi's t-shirt and black leggings. It was probably the young woman solo-traveller part that did it. When they checked my ticket just before boarding they kept it for a little longer, and printed me a new one with the upgrade. It was really nice

You look like Mark Renton when he’s the Realtor in London. And I fucking love it!

Just a tip James: wearing shoulder straps on your suit damages them in the worst place you could; the structured lining and canvassing will be irrevocably crushed. I wear suits when I travel but I always carry my duffel or briefcase in my hands

I met a man on a flight to new orleans once. We had an empty seat between us in a packed flight. He was given snacks before takeoff, he was given free drinks and even hooked me up. The attendants kept asking if there was anything they could help him with. I asked why this was, maybe he knew one of the employees.. nope. He passed out candy to everyone from the front desk person, boarding attendant and all cabin attendants. He said don’t but chocolate, buy candy like starburst and skittles because chocolate can mess up their uniform. Buy halloween bags so you don’t have to buy candy in the airport. We drank together the whole flight and he was the nicest man. I called him the candy man and his advice has changed my travel experience forever. I am always given some complimentary treats or drink. But that is not the real advantage to this. The flight attendants work hard and deal with a lot every day. It really changes their whole attitude and makes their day. If I don’t receive anything, it is still extremely worth it. Thank you candy man, wherever you are.

For almost all international airlines, they go by the tier system. On an overbooked flight top tier passengers will be upgraded first. When all top tier passengers have been upgraded and more are necessary, they move to the next tier and so on. If there are no more tiered people to upgrade, depending on the airline, counter staff just upgrade at random and more than likely it’ll be someone they remember who was nice at check in. There are some airlines who still go by the system and whoever is next in line, depending on the system, will be upgraded. So the bottom line if you’re flying an international airline just dress comfortably.

I fly a lot for work and its incredibly rare that im on a flight that isnt completely booked these days. This might have worked when it was more common but i feel like in post COVID theres just less flights going out, you could be on a red eye to st louis on a tuesday and still not have room to breathe.

My sister is currently doing a PhD in mathematics. The reason for this?

It’s so that her boarding pass will say “Dr [surname]” and the flight attendants will assume she’s a medical practitioner and give her free upgrades.

Hands down the best reason to get a PhD in mathematics if you ask me.

My grandma always said to dress well cause if they have to upgrade anyone, they’ll choose someone who at least looks like they belong there

This is one of those urban myths. An airline will look at various things before giving an upgrade rather than just if you are in suit. I have been in business class a few times and nobody in there is ever in a suit

It did happen to me once... but it's probably not automatic, you probably only increase your chances.

Pretty much all airlines do upgrades within their frequent flyers programmes now so if you're not a regular customer/don't have accrued loyalty points, it's unlikely to work. Nice suit though 🤷‍♀️
