It detects what game is inserted on powerup and switches to that gamemode. The CPU still believes Submarine is playing when the screen/cartridge is detached.

Wow, that was a whiff of nostalgia I probably didn’t need. I actually HAD an Interchangeable Game Child! I reckon it was 1995 and I was in hospital having my appendix out. My Mum said she would buy me a present to cheer me up while I recovered. She asked what I wanted and I hinted that I’d like a Game Boy, knowing that might have been a stretch money wise but remaining hopeful anyway. Imagine my disappointment when she returned to the hospital with… the Game Child!

I think it worked as well when it was new as yours does a couple of decades later. James has definitely spent more time and effort on it than it ever deserved but it was worth it for the hilarious teardown!
