Tony Jeffries shares how to throw the proper technique of throwing a boxing left hook. I always teach throwing the hook with thumbs up because it has less rotation with the wrist, elbow and shoulder. With less rotation and movements there is less chance you will get injured.

The weight transfer makes such a huge difference. I think that's why most people say their lead hook sucks. Thanks

I'd never thought about that, I'd always just used thumb up for tight hooks, thumb in for longer hooks and thumb down for reaching hooks; that way you don't end up slapping with the longer punches and still land with the knuckles

I personally throw lead hooks with both thumb up and thumb towards me depending on the
Range. I'll throw with thumb towards me if I'm throwing the hook at a slightly longer range then midrange to land with 1st 2 knuckles, then if I throw the hook at midrange to close range I'll turn the thumb upward, and even close range (on the inside) I'll use both, sometimes with the thumb up and sometimes thumb towards me if I'm rolling my shoulder as I come up and over there shoulder in the inside. (Over there shoulder if they are south paw, or squared up on the inside)
If I'm throwing a lead hook to the body(left hook/orthodox) I'll throw with a upper-hook angle and as I do that my 1st 2 knuckles turn like a corkscrew on impact (counter clockwise) as I hit at an upward hook angle, so I could land on the liver more centered. (Because the liver hides partially under the ribs, by landing at that angle it gets the power hitting more centered on the liver.)
Even when I throw a rear/right hook to the body I'll also corkscrew the 1st 2 knuckles clockwise (not counter clockwise because it's on the right hand)
To make it more painful as I hit the floating ribs. If my opponent becomes more aware of my right hook to the body after I've thrown it a few times cuz he don't want to get hit with that again I'll use that to set up an overhand/or right hook to the head.
That's what I love about the "sweetscience" when a boxer throws the same punch different ways it opens up a different result. Every variable in any technique I use has a purpose, like everything I do in boxing has a purpose. Literally everything.
Thank you Tony for all you do, I appreciate you and a few other that put these videos out that benefits me Learning and growing in boxing. Because of the access to YouTube boxing videos I can Learn and grow in and outside the gym. Thanks bro and God bless you and yours

It's something I've had discussions over for 15 years. I agree with thumbs up is more comfortable (I even got a little ache in the shoulder with thumbs down at first). Yet, I find the landing to cover more fist area (especially with hooks to the body) with thumbs down

Exept that référés in amateur boxing don't like thumbs up cause they easily confuse it with an open hand strike.

Now I understand it. Because I see I a lot of videos the 90° elbow but in your videos it's a little bit lower. Depending on situation and space and also position sometimes it's better to use the technics with more rotation because than you can also hit for bad position with a bit more rotation from shoulder like a elbows punch and no pivot... So only the shoulder and hips rotates a bit. I do this for long hooks because you can do it without loading the punch by turning the body from your stand.

Good point good point. Something to think about.

The problem with thumb facing you is punching without gloves. It's so easy to injure/break softer pinkie knuckle if you connect with farther part of the fist.

I didn’t know that coach. Throw a hook with thumbs up. Got it

I've always preferred thumb down. It's probably less powerful, but i feel like it's easier land with the two big knuckles.

Hey Tony big fan of your channel. I couldn’t find this covered in any other media and I don’t know if it matters but should I throw an uppercut fist vertically or horizontally?

Coach some coaches teach that the rotation of lead hook to be from the back leg and you teach here to be in the front leg but you did mention before for body hooks that you use your back leg for rotation so why is that ?
I am interested in the mechanics of boxing I like it I hope more videos coming on the mechanics of the jab cross and others

Myself being a southpaw boxer, a left hook comes naturally for me.
