I actually thought the capybara was the most intelligent and self aware. He knew enough to rescue the lemur, etc.

The secretarybird ascends to heaven not because of bitterness, but because of its success in helping the cat and the rest of the group. Saving the terrestrian beings was his last goal before joining its peers in the spiritual world. Like a bodhisattva.

So happy Flow won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

I felt that both the cat and the bird had died but the cat had nine lives so it wasn’t granted access to heaven yet.

This whole movie had a Spiritual touch to it. First of all, the name Flow indicated the flow in Life that's intuition.

The white bird I felt symbolised suffering, detachment and Transcendence.

The Whale showed compassion, hope and resilience. And the changes in nature (life), ups and downs everything is temporary.

And the lemur who was attracted to material things in the end found the value of friendship. The value of relationship we have with other beings.

Capybara showed kindness and the dog showed life is not that serious, to stay happy.

The cat while represents each one of us.

All the animals together represented acceptance and to adapt to the adversities in Life and to stand together as One even tho they were all different species. The last scene where they look at the reflection shows they are looking at not the differences but the essence in all of them.

And also Silence speaks more than words.

This is literally the most beautiful movie I saw in the last 10 years.
The scenarios, the soundtrack, the animals.. I’m 39 years old and I cried a lot. Such a beautiful movie

I interpreted the secretarybird insisting on steering the boat, and how he looked at the Pillars/Mountains a couple of times as that he wanted to go there to ascend to heaven after he helped the other animals but lost his friends/family and the ability to fly normally.

The whale actually dies in that last scene. You can hear it breathing and then the breathing stops. The post credit scene just shows that life goes on. The circle of life and all that jazz.

Secretary birds have cultural meaning in South Africa as protectors too, I think.

It was about humans…. We ruined planet and can only survive if we learn to help each other. Greed and selfishness were the pack of dogs minus the one who was willing to help e.g the dogs reflexes have them abandon helping with the ship in danger because triggered by a rabbit. Even the cat’s affection for the whale who was dying…. There is only a giant statue of a human and he was drowning in the water. If we don’t get it together and look in the mirror (that the lemur kept looking in) to see ourselves for more clearly what we are..either helpers and friends, or greedy, selfish people who destroy the world and all life on it. Hopefully we’ll learn before we kill the planet and each other

A word of warning. If you stream the film be sure to not let your streaming service cut off the post credits scene. That happened to me last night on Amazon Prime.

I believe the cat's dream foreshadows death, as the deer are all surrounding it in concentric circles. When you see the Secretary Bird's death/sacrifice depending on your interpretation, the top of the plateau it's on has a similar circular pattern that it stands in the middle of when it accepts its death/sacrifice.

This animation deserved an Oscar, something more than that, a chance to be known by all of us! Symbolic, spiritual, bright, peaceful and beautiful. Giving so many layered meanings to us in every way without any words in it. Connected us to the animals deeply.

Really great video, definitely enjoy the interpretation and agree with a lot of it. The director stated the movie is about change, not just change in general but seeing that change in the characters. With that in mind, here's some speculation on my part: change fits right in with the phrase "going with the flow" where you adapt and roll with the punches rather than fight against the current.

The bird "dies". I don't think it's important if this is actual death; it's at the very least a death of character (character as a trait, not "a character"). All of the other animals change over the course of the movie except for the bird. When faced with the realization it needed to change in order to live in this world, the bird decided to move on.

What happens at the end: the animals realize that they didn't just change, but how they see each other has also changed. I don't think they die at the end - it's possible, but it would kind of upend the point of the story if they died IMO, given that the movie is about change. We see the deer all run in a direction, which is exactly what happens at the beginning of the movie. I suspect that another flood happens and seeing the whale at the end could imply. Sure, it's possible the animals die, but I think it's more fitting to the theme of the movie if they now are able to work together better than before and weather the storm (storm being the alternate name for this movie).

First thing I watched the day I subscribed to Max. I did play the credits thinking there might be a final scene but did not see the whale being saved or the return of the flood waters. I do think the central message is that we should be kind to each other and learn to get along despite the fact that we were all born different. Truly beautiful movie that stays with you. I plan to rewatch it soon.
