Instead of using storyboards, I design the scenes directly in 3d. This is necessery because of the long shots where the camera is moving a lot. I explore a rough version of the set with a virtual camera, often finding unxpected discoveries, almost like on a live-action film set.
As you can see, it doesn’t match exactly with the final version. In this case I had to adjust the camera after the first pass of the animation to have it react more naturally to the action. Animation by Maxime Leclerc and Florian Durand.

One of the aspects I loved from this movie was that, although the rendering seemed a little cartoonish compared to big budget studios an all their minions invested in making hair feel natural; the movement of the animals were so natural and fluid. I'm so happy this won the Oscar!!!
It got the recognition it deserved.
It felt so much more real to me, I forgot I was watching a animation. And I was so impressed it didn't need any dialogue because the characters expressed everything in their faces and actions. This really sets the bar up for how I want animation to be. And such a deep, beautiful message behind this. I love when I learn and feel something from a movie. It really had it all
