An international team of European astronomers using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has detected an extremely small main belt asteroid, estimated to be between 300 to 650 feet in length. The discovery was made while conducting calibration observations of the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI). This serendipitous discovery may be the smallest object observed to date by the James Webb and has important implications for our understanding of the formation and evolution of the solar system.
