James Webb Space Telescope Orbit - Animation #shorts

Показать описание
This animation illustrates the James Webb Space Telescope's orbit as seen from above the Sun's north pole.

Webb does not orbit around the Earth. Instead, it orbits the Sun, 1.5 million kilometers (1 million miles) away from the Earth at what is called the second Lagrange Point, or L2. This orbit lets Webb stay in line with the Earth as it moves around the Sun, allowing its sunshield to always provide the telescope protection from the light and heat of the Sun and Earth (and Moon).

It's mind boggling to imagine the calculations required to get from launch to orbiting Earth to orbiting the Sun. That's just nuts!!!

Think of L2 as a gravity hill. If you sit on the very top, you are free from pushes and pulls. BUT the crazy part is, JWST can’t turn around, so to avoid accidentally falling down the other side and being lost forever, it sits just below the top of the hill on our side, always sliding back down and needs fuel to maintain position, that fuel will run out after about 20 years.

Thank you for the education on the James Webb a truly remarkable feat of engineering!!!

Amazing how over centuries, humans went from observing the stars, to surfing it. Damn science….you crazy

It's only the physicist and aerospace engineers who have deeper understanding of this illustration❤❤

This is why JWST is a mind blowing project for both Astronomical researches as also for human existence.

I didn't realize L2 was like that, thanks for the post

That is very good now if you can show the curvature of space time produced by gravity overlaying. That would rock, bro.

Crazy to think they made it bigger than the earth

L-2 is lagrange point.. It is there gravity and space curvature balances out.the telescope is considered parked, because it takes no effort to hold it's position.l-2is just dragging it along for the ride.😊😊😊😊😊😊

It is very interesting, scientist are able😊 to find out L2 point where one Indian satelite is located and study sun for various parameters.
It is good achievement. Jay Bharat.
