As someone who deals with nuclear wareheads, you can definitely blow up the subs without detonating the nukes. Nukes are stable even when outside explosions are happening and has multiple safeties to ensure that in the event its transport is scuttled or blown up - it will remain in its dormant “safety” state. Similar safeties that we had when the US dropped several nukes or “broken arrows” inside the US on accident during transport.
