When a Japanese Submarine Attacked California

While we all remember Pearl Harbor, it was not the only time in World War II that Japan attacked the United States. In February of 1942, the Imperial Japanese Navy had a submarine surface off the coast of California and bombard the shore with shells. And while the Ellwood Oil Field near Santa Barbara took little actual damage, the attack left quite an impression on the American people. Through the national fear it created, this weak Japanese attack managed to cause the Battle of Los Angeles, a night of city-wide panic which saw anti-aircraft guns fired into the sky while five people died in the chaos. It all teaches a valuable lesson on the danger of wartime anxiety, but I'll leave that to a history teacher. Instead, enjoy the story of World War II's forgotten Japanese attack.

They should’ve just texted everyone saying missiles were inbound in 15 minutes

The most amazing thing about this channel is that it hasn't gone huge yet. Best kept secret on the internet. Please keep up the great work, it's gonna go massive soon.

Can't wait to be one of those people who can say they've been here before you got big when you inevitably get hundreds of thousands of subs

2, 000 drunk people breaking windows and singing "God bless America" sounds like the thing i do every weekend. But instead it's doing PCP and listening to System of a Down.

I grew up in Santa Barbara and remember hearing this story ( somewhat embellished) but in the word of mouth version back in 60's it was that "they blew up an oil rig, flames everywhere.. killed everyone".
I never knew the actual story until now.

For the quality of these videos I’m surprised how few subscribers you have. Just a suggestion, you should do a video on the 1904 Olympic Marathon, it you haven’t heard of it.

I love your videos! How you're still criminally under-subscribed is baffling. Keep the wit coming!

5:48 "Locals began calling 9-1-1..." - 9-1-1 wasn't implemented until 1968. Back then they would have called the Operator and asked for the police. As in the classic movie line "Operator! Get me the police!". Anyway, I'm fun at parties.

I love videos! Just a suggestion but maybe you could make one on Agent Garbo? He was a farmer turned double agent from Spain working for Great Britain during WWII. Supposedly he was a kickass spy and lied to the Nazis about D-Day and convinced them they were landing on a different beach or something along those lines im a bit hazy on the details. Either way could be interesting and would love to see it in your style.

I read that he was at a banquet and fell down the stairs and the people laughed at him.
