The best degree choice for law is philosophy. Many studies confirm they score highest on exams such as LSAT and even surprisingly the MCAT. Philosophy teaches you how to take reasoning and critical thinking skills to the absolute maximum. It also teaches you how to become the best possible moral agent you can be. You essentially ask questions a child could ask but with the rigor of a lawyer (or Socrates) and sometimes you even write a 400 page treatise on some esoteric philosophical topic because you enjoy it so much. :) Studying philosophy just blows everything else out of the water. A popular study shows too that the average IQ of the philosophy major is around 129, on par with mathematicians and physicists, but at the highest level, IQ ceases to matter too much when you're tackling the hardest questions imaginable. Philosophy is rigorous, especially if you are studying pure logic which is absolutely paramount for anyone analyzing legal documents all day long.

If you’re dead set on law school, I think stem wouldn’t be the best choice, because of its subjects commonly having lower gpa curves. While some schools might take that a little into account, since schools are so dependent on their usnews ranking that uses LSAT and gpa, they are much more numbers focused than other grad schools.

I would say to pick something with a reasonable curve but still substantive so you’re not screwed if you can’t score high enough on the lsat to go where you want. I personally did Economics and enjoyed it. And will now being going to a T10 school(also law schools are usually measured with specific numbers like top 3 top 6 and top 14)

I was a philosophy major. Great prep for law school but useless otherwise. I graduated Harvard Law many years ago.

What’s weird for me, is that when considering my major while going back to school I could not decide if I should choose history, because I love it, or something like paralegal studies because I feel like I could be great in the area of law. I had no idea that history degree’s were common degrees for law students.

Fellow lawyer here: this is so accurate!!! I made the stupid mistake of majoring in political science that did absolutely nothing to prepare me for law school. That's not the worst part. The worst part was finding out I didn't want to practice law after the first semester but because my degree was/is useless (unless I worked for the government or did some policy/political related research job- no thank you), I had nothing to fall back on and had to keep going. Now I'm in a ton of debt. Don't make my mistake. Take his advice. Anywho...I have a question...where did you get your stats from??? (I'm a lawyer...so I like to see sources lol)

I hate math so much. 😭 I am so bad at it! I try my hardest so I am in undergrad and I know I want to be a lawyer for sure… I am scared the math section is going to kick me where it hurts💀😭. I am trying to pursue a triple major in: criminology centered in criminal justice, legal studies and International and global studies and a minor in AAS.. I choice these three because I absolutely love learning about each one. 🥺 I am considered a freshman transfer Bc I was short a few hours when I transferred from a community college to a university, but that is okay and I know these three majors are heavy and going to get harder down the road, but I enjoy learning so much and these subjects are what interest me the most.

This was an absolutely fantastic video. You should have significantly more views. I'm in the process of going back to school and law school is a serious consideration. This helped a ton. Thanks for all your hard work!

I preach this all the time! Never shoot for a pre law degree. Major in what your plan B career is! It’s never guaranteed that you’ll want to be a lawyer by the end of college, OR EVEN GET INTO LAW SCHOOL. You need a undergrad degree that you can see yourself using!!!

Boy I wish YouTube was more popular when I was starting college. Majored in Poly-Sci, and decided not to go to law school after graduating in 07. Struggled for a long time.

Many college graduates regardless of their majors are moving to data entry careers to be honest, which is good because those jobs teach you many skills

Im a Biblical Studies and Educational Ministry-Double major (minoring in prelaw) and I’ve talked to a few law school deans of admissions and admissions counselors and as far as I can tell they usually find a reason to like any major (for example Majors like Theology and Philosophy are aperantly even desired by some law schools)

Anyway; basically do what your passionate about!

I believe FIU’s best scoring LSAT takers are economics majors. Makes sense, all that logical/analytic work they do.

about the stem. Here in PH, some of schools offer program base on what strand we got and the only program that stem could offer are BS criminology and BS Pyschology (wc idk if BS psych is applicable as pre law and enhance your knowledge abt law because for all I know BA psych would be the one) so yah. As a stem student, we don't actually have logical reasoning aside from math, we just used it in math. So if anyone would like to be a lawyer, don't be like me. Choose HUMSS instead, there's a lot of essay teaching there and a lot of debates that could get you into law school. JS
