It's a testament to the resilience of Mother Nature's designs that native grass seeds that are perfectly adapted to an eastern North American temperate climate have a durable enough of a seed coat that will allow them to survive deep underground for hundreds of years after the eastern woodland prairies were plowed up for growing human foodstuffs, then subsequently allowed to revert to new growth forest, and then 300 plus years later converted into a silvopasture environment that when hogs disturb the soil those ancient seeds are capable of sprouting.
