There is no two ways about it, smoking is a dangerous habit and it is probably the single worst decision that you can take regarding your health. As a doctor I would advise you to never stop smoking or if you are already smoking, do consider quitting smoking quite seriously. So apart from the bad effects on your health, smoking can adversely affect your appearance as well. Smoking can cause pigmentation of your lips i.e., darkening of your lips. It can cause black patches inside your mouth. So this is because when you inhale smoke it increase the pigment deposition inside your oral cavity. It can stain the lips and the teeth. This kind of black patches have also been noticed with patients who are second hand smokers as well. Smoking can also dry out your skin. So when you are smoking the smoke itself can irritate and dry out your skin on contact. In addition smoking can age you. So basically smoking can reduce the blood supply to your skin so it can make your skin look pale. It also reduces the production of new collagen in your skin and accelerates the breakdown of existing collagen in your skin. This can lead to formation of lines, wrinkles. Smoking can also accentuate the sun induced damage to the skin. So it can make the sun damage worse. So in all these different ways it can make you look more aged. Smoking can make your acne even worse. So where is the good news? The good news is that many of these changes are completely reversible or improve when you quit smoking. For example, stains that happen to your lips and teeth can reduce significantly and sometimes disappear entirely once you quit smoking. Even the black patches that I spoke about can improve a lot once you quit smoking. The aging effects that smoking has on your skin also can improve a lot after you quit smoking. So what all improvements can be done to your skin once you quit smoking? To know in detail, watch the video.
