My name is Shane and I'm the guy in this ad that talks about food coming out and to not use spray paints.  If you have any questions that you would like to have me answer just post them here and I will do my best to respond to them.  Thank you.

My older brother has a stoma and uses an electric larynx to talk. I can't always understand what he says. I am so glad I gave up smoking. It wasn't easy but all the cravings and withdrawal symptoms were worth it. I'm 12 years smoke-free.

There is a “valve cover” in your throat called the epiglottis. When you swallow, this piece of tissue covers the opening to your trachea, or windpipe, to prevent food and liquid from getting into your lungs. When the larynx is removed, this valve cover that protects the windpipe is also removed.

It's not a laughing matter everyone. They smoked too much and their voice is gone and had to use voice box. How would their family member(s) feel if they can't hear their real voice anymore? You know very well how tragic it was. DON'T SMOKE, DON'T SMOKE, DON'T

Thank you for your positive feedback regarding the CDC Tips campaign, as the goal is to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and to motivate smokers to quit. Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States, killing more than 443, 000 Americans each year. The Tips campaign features compelling stories of former smokers living with smoking-related diseases and disabilities and the toll that smoking-related illnesses have taken on them.

Shane--Your part in the ad touched me. I am a doctoral student in education with emphasis in health. I was supposed to watch these ads for a class, but learning about you all has put a real face on smoking. Thanks for your bravery.

Thank you for making this commercial. I showed this to my mother, who's been smoking 2 packs a day for 30 years, and she has been free of cigarettes for 5 days now. She saw this and immediately made the vow to quit.

Thank you for these commercials. I smoked for 29 years and am now two months smoke free. I have feeling again in my throat and can breathe a deeper breath already. I hope I quit on time. These commercials really helped me. RIP Sweet lady. Thank you for bravely making the commercials.

Does anyone else think the guy with the glasses has a cool robot voice? Not trying to be mean but I just love that sound.

They should show this commercial more than that abysmal "Catmaggedon" commercial. This commercial is genuinely informative and is an actual warning as to what cigarettes can do to you. This commercial utterly stomps that other one.

You know, you see these celebrities such as Skrillex smoking, and you would ask yourself, "How hard can it be?" This ad and the others that CDC has made answer the question with, "Very hard, " and that's an understatement by a long shot. I can hardly even bare to even look at these people. It's like, "I don't want to go through that sort of pain!" This ad explains it all. If you don't want a hole in your neck, DON'T SMOKE!! I haven't smoked, and I never will.

That device is called an electrolarynx. It is used to help a person talk after removal of the larynx, or voice box. The device is held against the neck, and the sound travels through the neck to the mouth.
