Want to know about Narrowboat Electrics? It's time to wire up narrowboat Silver Fox and in this vlog we'll be installing our 12V & 230V electrical system, wiring, batteries & inverter.
In this vlog we'll talk you through the electrical system we're installing on our narrowboat, from the batteries and shore hook-up, through to the inverter, distribution board, each of the circuits, switches, and appliances.

Colin shows you how to carry out a power audit, and invents a battery made from jelly beans (no, really!).

I love the way you explained electricity with your dash off to the power station. You always make your vlogs really interesting. I’m hooked🤣🤣🤣

I have totally enjoyed these vlogs on the building of Silver Fox. THAT is how we would do it. I am an only child and my dad was a auto mechanic and later machinest extraordinaire. He taught me how to take care of my car, I watched him fix and repair things, and guess I inherited his genes to like doing that kind of things...even though I was/am a girly-girl!!!! I asked, and he taught me all about all of that stuff. Silver Fox is not only very pretty but you know her inside and out. That is fabulous! And, I have enjoyed and understood everything being done. Thank you for those vlogs.

Another very informative Vlog, as a retired Electrician & Communications Engineer, this was right up my street... thanks 😁👍

The best part about a relationship with an electrician? He keeps you up to date on current events.

Very well explained. I have explained the amp hour definition to people with good success but not in the short time you explained it...nicely done. This was a great video that many a boat manufacturer could use to explain the very basics for the new narrowboater...thanks for sharing...Vic

Holy cow! You should have been a teacher. You are brilliant at explaining this!

Very enjoyable series, it is great seeing your boat being built. I only discovered this channel a few weeks back, and just caught up to this video.

The power audit table is very misleading when you talk about amp-hours for 230 volt appliances like the TV. Some may assume that relates to the amp-hours the batteries are rated at, which is far from the case. The 0.64Ah needs to be multiplied by 230V/12V to get a useful figure (12.3Ah). You will also need to account for the inverter efficiency which is harder to estimate, so you are better off doing a measurement through the inverter but lets assume it is 90% then your actual consumption would 13.6Ah. Another factor to consider with the inverter is there is some background consumption from it even when no 230V appliance is in use, unless of course you disconnect the inverter as well.

I can see so much work goes into these videos and the quality shines above the rest. Excellent 👏👏👏

The best explanation and demonstration of volts, watts, amp hours that I've ever seen. Useful information for RVers, and van lifers too.

You put so much work into these vlogs. They’re so interesting and entertaining. I think Shaun says “you can’t say that” every vlog! 😂 love the outtakes xx

Well done guys... As a professional automotive electrician I was very impressed with your explanation of this subject. Probably one of the best that I have seen here on YouTube.

Brilliant. I’m an Electrician and I love your explanation of amp hours - I’m going to steal that idea and make a jelly bean battery to demonstrate this. 👍

Oh, this one had me in hysterics! Colin, you and Shaun did an amazing job of explaining a topic that even most Mechanics, find difficult to understand. As an Aircraft Mechanic and total nerd Amateur Radio Operator, I find the topic of Electricity and Electronics quite fascinating. I think your idea of using a Jelly Bean battery to explain current draw in Amp/Hours was sheer genius. The power audit was easy to understand and I think many if not most grasped your explanation. You took a difficult topic, seasoned it with a boatload of humor, even explaining the Power Grid and held our interest to the end! Well Done You ! Oh . . . and to see the two of you doing the Cha Cha . . . well that was the icing on the cake !

As an electrician, I subbed purely on the jelly bean explanation. n
Now I know how to explain this stuff to my mates who know nout about power. Also, great video.

Cant thank you enough for this explanation, I have been scratching my head on whether to get 12v sockets on our new boat or not. Now I know. Thank you thank you thank you!
