What Caused the Great Depression?

The Great depression sent millions into poverty, resulted in bread lines, bank runs, and otherwise the collapse of the global economy. It’s not almost been 100 years since this catastrophic event - so what caused it? Well, economists can’t really agree - and it could happen again.

Coming out of facing alot, I knew two things about the stock market: It caused the Great Depression, and the fastest way to make a million on the markets was to start with two million. And then the Great Recession happened only a few years later. So yeah, I wish someone had better explained it to me earlier in life. Having a good entry and exit strategy will make you succeed in the stock market.

To all of you the watch videos like this as a hobby, you people are the future of this country. You wonder why these videos don’t have more views or likes? It’s because nobody finds the actual history of our country interesting.

Any talk of the cause of the Great Depression, without a mention of the Smott-Hawley Tariff Act, is not comprehensive. Killing free trade didn't have a positive effect.

World war 2 got us out of the Great depression. By 1939 we were already selling bullets and planes to great Britain

When the Great Depression and other huge catastrophes occurred, I used to believe that everyone went bankrupt, but they didn't... Some made millions; I also assumed that everyone closed their businesses during those times, but certain some did start new ones. It all depends on your point of view; there will always be moments of prosperity for some individuals and times of depression or recession for others. My primary concern is how to grow my reserve of $220k which has been sitting duck since forever with zero to no gains

I’ve seen various different arguments on this, ultimately I’ve settled on this conclusion. The great depression was caused in most part because of the Smoote-Hawley tariffs, which effectively shut down international trade to and from America, as that’s when the bulk of the damage when it comes to unemployment really kicked off. In fact depending on who you ask it can be fairly argued that the stock market crash the year prior was a wholly unrelated series of events as many argue that key economic indicators were already showing signs that the economy was recovering just a short 8 months after the stock market crash, then the tariffs come along and woops Coca Cola suddenly no longer has any international buyers and they have to shut down factories because they’re suddenly producing more than they can sell. The gold standard theory make zero sense to me as WWI had basically already wiped out any true gold standard, I’ve heard what replaced it described as a gold exchange standard, which is not the same thing at all.

The Great Depression certainly wasn't the sole cause of WWII but it did play a role.

At the time the stock exchanges were regulated by the states in which they resided. FDR, as governor of New York, was responsible for the regulation of theNew York stock exchange, the largest exchange by far.
Two months after the stock market crash unemployment peaked at about 9% and for the next six months decline down to about 6.3%. Had Calvin Coolidge run for a second term and was elected, he would not have intervened, and I believe the crash of 1929 would’ve been a short-lived as the depression of1920-21. however, Congress and Herbert Hoover interfered in the economy, especially the smoot Hawley bill, and after that unemployment shot up.

The Fed got involved and reduce the currency supply by about a third, and that’s when the banks failed.
FDR ran for president promising to cut spending and balance the budget. Once elected FDR did the opposite.
FDR’s new deal Roland manufacturing in the US and his new deal policies purchased and destroyed crops and livestock and paid farmers not to plant at a time when the average citizen couldn’t afford to buy food.
An analysis of the new deal found that those policies depend and lengthen the Great Depression. that’s why unemployment never fell below 10% throughout the decade of the 1930s. In fact FDR had to give up his new deal policies and that’s when the US recovered from the great depression starting in 1940.

The New Deal exacerbated and prolonged the Great Depression, the economy was already starting to recover when it was passed and it just made things worse. As usual, government is the problem, laissez-faire is the solution.

If the government would not constantly change the meaning of things and or rewrite history than the USA would be in a Depression

25% unemployment means 75% were working. Guessing at least some who were doing so (especially guys with no families) saw the economy deteriorating, saved what they could and, since there was no FDIC, bought a safe (and possibly a gun for protection) in which to keep their $. Surmising these people did just fine.

You avoided not actually grasp with why the depression started and what actions caused what response. To bad you didn’t have the courage to actually educate viewers.
