Do note that this will give a chance for the the world saves to be deleted or currupted

Easier way to do it with 2 people: Go on one of their worlds and give the items you want to duplicate to them, make sure it's before an autosave or the game will remember you gave the items to your friend. Once the items have been given, alt+f4 or close the game entirely. Rejoin the world. The game will remember you having the items but also you giving your friend the items, meaning you both get them. This doesn't cause corruption of worlds if you do it before an autosave.

You can also die and alt+f4 or deactivate the app then enter and it will also give you the effect

A less risky trick is to put the items you want to duplicate in the chest, save and exit, re-enter the world, turn off auto save, after that pick up your items, and manage to die somehow, the second you die try to instantly close the game, and then enter again, when you come back in, you'll find all your stuff in your inventory, and chest 👍

There's a much easier way to do this without the chance of deleted/corrupted world saves (in my own experience), or trying to time anything weird upon leaving the world:
1. Open the world in multiplayer.
2. Place item in chest. Do NOT close the chest, otherwise it won't work.
3. Alt + F4.
4. Re-open Terraria, and open the same world you just force-quit from in single player.
5. Open the same chest you put the item in, and observe how the item stayed in your inventory, but is *also* present in the chest. I mainly use it for money because of how easy it makes re-forging, but you can use it for anything.

Journey mode characters: look what they need to mimic a fraction of my power

This feels like the duplicate glitch in Pokémon Emerald.

You can also just take all the items into your inventory die and exit before respawning. Dying saves your player inventory but not your world data, as such if you close the application after taking items from a chest they will still be in there and not in your inventory. If you decide to kill your character before closing the application it will actually let you keep the items though.

if you are doing the alt + f4 on pc make sure auto save is off. And if you are doing it on mobile, put the items in the chest, save and exit, take the items out of the chest, die, then the second you die reset the tab.

Note:
On console (at least Xbox) you need to specifically close the game (fully, not just go to home) as it's saying syncing files, not during the % screen

Another slightly harder but more reliable method is to:

Step 1. Keep the items you want to dupe in your inventory.
Step 2. Host a local server on whichever world you wanna dupe in.
Step 3. Put the items you want to dupe from your inventory into a chest.
Step 4. Close the game without saving.

It takes a bit more time, but it's risk-free as far as I know.

Plot twist: your world files got corrupted

Same works with a multiplayer world as long as you dont save and quit. Just make sure that you dont close the chest menu before you alt f4 and you place the items inside instead of taking them out

the other way around works without as much of a corruption chance. Open a multiplayer world, since they are saved differently from single player, grab the stuff you want to dupe in your inventory, then save and exit. When you load back in, place the stuff in a chest and alt + f4 then and there. This saves the world data but not the player data, meaning when you load back in you will have the item and the chest will have the freshly stored original.

If you are on computer, you can go on the game's files and duplicate your character's files.

I reccomend a "dupe" world just as a safety precaution while doing this.

If your system is fast enough you physically can't close the application fast enough to make the duplication work.
