Got to love how these Scottish lads were able to get a guitar sound like a bagpipe

Part of the 'Positive Wave' led by U2 & Simple MInds. They made the guitar sound like Scottish bagpipes. We LOVED this!!!

Its not a bagpipe its a guitar played through a guitar pedal effect, which makes it sound like almost a bagpipe. Its such a great song and for those of us in the UK ( im from Scotland) its anazing that that song was a one wonder in the US as it wasnt that big a hit here compared to their other songs. Only reached 17 i believe. They had bigger hits here.

"That bagpipe" was an electric guitar! None of us had ever heard anything like this, in the 1980s. The inventiveness of young musicians and their producers was amazing and exciting. Most of their imaginations were sparked by new technology that enabled the next generation synthesizers and guitar effects to become lighter, more portable and cheap enough for teenagers to afford. It was an exciting time to be young. New, ever-miniaturizing electronics opened up new dreams for musicians and filmmakers. We, the audience, benefitted.

In a big country is such a great song. I always thought they deserved wider recognition.

This song stuck out to me from the rest of the pack when it came out because of that guitar that sounded like bagpipes! I remember being blown away by that. If you watch the music video you can see him playing it. I find it so cool when people can do things like that.

These guys were great. They knew how to write anthems that rocked the live setting. Gotta love the E-Bow effect on the guitar which created the Bagpipe sound. Pretty sure they're still playing these days with bassist Tony Butler leading since Stuart Adamsons death.

The bagpipe sound was actually their guitars. As for the drummer Mark recorded albums with Pete and Simon Townshend, Roger Daltrey, Midge Ure, The Cult, Procol Harum just to name a few. Was also the house drummer along with Phil Collins at the Prince's Trust concerts in the UK and has played with lots of major artists.

Thank you for not watching the video. The band usually doesn’t have anything to do with the video and reaction videos are about the song, yet many react to the video itself. Maddening. You are doing this right and it’s rare.

This band is the pride of my home town Dunfermline, my idols and my friends. There are no bagpipes here at all. That beautiful sound you hear is my mate, the late great Stuart Adamson playing GUITAR in his own unique way. The comparison to the pipes is just wrong and actually really upset the band. It is the tones of Scottish folk music, the ACCORDION and the FIDDLE that play these songs and that is what you are hearing I promise. In Scotland, where we're from bagpipes are purely an instrument of war and Stuart Adamson was as anti war as you can get so the comparison upset him. Don't mean to be mean at all by saying this, soooo many journalists back in the day said the same thing over and over.

Much love from Bonnie Scotland and check out more from Big Country, they had an 18 year successful career.
