This music is truly one of the most glorious film soundtracks, not just for Westerns but for all movies.

Great movie about a mature man in the midst of irrationality and ignorance.

As old as this move is, I NEVER saw it or even HEARD OF it until I was 65. Now it's one of my TOP favorites! Great music, great story and as star studded as the night sky!

I was born in 1953, I loved Cowboys, and my Dad took me to see this, I was so excited, as it was such a big thing to go to the Cinema, (pictures), and now at 69, it brings a tear to my eye because it reminds me of my Dad.

This score alone is majestic for so many reasons and should have won the Oscar easily. But couple that with the cinematographer’s skill to blend music and image and it’s as good as it can be, particularly when it switches to the close-up of the horses’ heads and necks pulling their burden with power and humility! It’s moving beyond words, and remains in the heart like the moment you really fell in love.

From the opening music you are in no doubt this is a western, and what a western, a huge a big western, fantastic story magnificent actors, great director and a pure genius soundtrack that just wraps the whole film in a magnificent ambience. One of the great westerns and what a performance from Gregory Peck.

One of these great opening themes that make you want to watch the film - which I did with a friend in the UK in 1959 when I was 16. It was a hot Saturday afternoon too but neither of us were into sunbathing, so we went to see this instead and loved every minute of it. Shame they don't make films like this any more.

Who gives an brilliant piece of music like this a thumbs down and why?

The Moross score is brilliant, and the combination of the hoof beats and jangling harnesses as a background to the music is sheer genius. I thought it was magnificent when I first heard it and I still admire it all these years later. The film itself is an unforgettable Western epic; Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, and Jeanne Simmons never looked better; and Burl Ives provides the necessary gravitas to make an ordinary Western melodrama into something truly special.

William Wyler's success in 1958 and 1959 was linked to three factors: galloping horses, carriage wheels, and Charlton Heston...
