The most underrated band of the 80s.
This is a goose bump masterpiece.
It also reminds me of my dad . He played their stuff all the time . Unique.

I think this song is just brilliant. The lyrics, the instruments, the arrangement. It's beautiful. I was in my 20's in the 80's, and this is one of those songs that has stayed with me.

I wish I had understood the lyrics in the 80s.
I just learned of Stuart's death. I'm 22 years late, but my heart breaks for his family and friends.
This song is even better than I thought it was.
I left home at 19 in 82. The line "You can't stay here when every single hope you had shattered." resonated with my soul. I left the state and have only returned to visit. Best thing I could have done for my mental health.

Big Country really invented a genre of their own, "Scots Rock". It breathes the warpipes and balladry of the Highlands, the working class suffering and resilience, it's not just rock with folksy windowdressing, it goes to the heart of Scottish identity and magically blends anthemic rock with true folk tradition. It also kinda makes me want to pick up a claymore and fight the English 😅.

someone once said that music is the closest thing we'll ever have to a time

“I can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime..”. Something to remind us that there are still things to be thankful for…even when we’re feeling beat down by life.

One of my little brothers, David, was as exceptional drummer. The Skids wanted him, but he turned them down, knowing he was, in his words, far better than they. David went to see Stuart’s new band, Big Country, just to see how they matched up & was fairly impressed. May I say, these were boys from the same area in Scotland, & my brother was THE best drummer in Scotland as a teenager; lots of A class musicians & promoters acknowledged him as such. FACT.
From a big sister’s point of view, may I say, God Bless you, Stuart, RIP.
Stu was a very shy boy.
I knew the fellow who talk Stu guitar well before he started off on his quest.

He gets a bagpipe sound from that guitar. It's so impressive.

Wow, I like this song even better now that I know what they’re actually singing 😅
I always thought they were saying, “like a lover’s voice, cross a mountainside”
