Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Spin-A-Wheel Random Picker!

preview_player
Показать описание
In preparation for hosting a comedy event with John Hodgman for this year's San Francisco Sketchfest, Adam has to build a Spin-A-Wheel random picker from scratch. It's going to allow him to use some new machining materials, engineer the wheel's movement to spin evenly, and build a way for the spinner to click through over 60 wooden pegs in a satisfying way. And with the event looming it has to actually be a one day build!

I love the fact he made a video about all the different ways and products available to draw circles and yet the 1st thing he uses is the inside of a roll of tape 🙂

He uses "moment of inertia" and "spinniest" in the same breath. It's utterly glorious chaos!

Part of why I love having Adam’s one day builds on in the background is that I relate so strongly with his verbal stims. 😆 it’s like hanging out with my friends, making weird noises at each other as we each do our own thing.

I have been watching lots of your content for several years now, and I love the format of this video. It was the style through the bulk of covid. No music, just live normal speed audio as your video is sped up for the viewer. plus the shots are so much more candid. LOVE IT ADAM!

I'm so proud to see at 18:30 that even Adam Savage practices the ancient ritual of checking that your router bit was tight before loosening it.

"I would rather clamp this" Then pulls out the most comical clamp I have ever seen

I was so ready for 189 to be prime.

Also, and I’m sure this is a well-beaten dead horse by now, but still, every time I see Adam start up a machine without ear protection, proper eye protection, or (in some cases) breathing protection, I wince. I thought I’d get used to it after a few dozen videos, but it hasn’t happened yet.

Underrated point that isn't mentioned enough
Adam's accents
As a brit, hearing Americans attempting English accents is usually a cringe worthy experience but his actually sound like actual English people you'd meet in real life

I want a one day build for a camera arm that doesn't squeek. On the other hand, it's a signature sound for Tested videos

I love the chuck key on a retractable lanyard. Never lose it!

The top comedy would be that there was no wheel on that stage but just Adam going "tadadadadadada ta ta ta ta
😂😂😂

3:46 Putting the mass in a rim does increase the Polar Moment of Inertia. This makes it require more force to accelerate (and decelerate) to (and from) a given angular velocity (say RPM).
Your intuition is spot-on, provided long spin time is the actual desired trait.
Starting high and then adjusting the force the decelerating arrow applies leaves the broadest calibration window.

Workshop tip; If your router is screaming, it's trying to tell you something!

(you're cutting too deep)
