Content writing vs Copywriting vs Sales writing vs SEO writing vs Creative writing... What’s the main difference?!

This video will help you discover the main differences between Content writing vs Copywriting. Since there are SOOO MANY types of writing, it’s pretty easy to confuse them. This is a problem because not knowing exactly what ‘type’ of writing to use can have disastrous consequences - especially if you’re selling something.

And this is true for both businesses as well as freelancers.

BUSINESSES

if you’re a business and you want text that converts, you definitely want direct response/sales/conversion copywriting - because these are specifically engineered to make readers say ‘YES’... and get you the sale.

However, if you’re looking to rank higher on Google or just want to kick your content marketing efforts up a notch, then you definitely need content writing or SEO writing.

FREELANCERS

If you encounter a client looking to ‘make more sales’, then they’re definitely after a direct response/sales/conversion copywriter, who knows how to persuade and boost their bottom line. This requires a unique skill set but if you possess it, you’ll be rewarded handsomely.

But then again, if the project is more about blog writing, article writing, or generating more shares online, then they’re probably looking for a content writer or SEO writer - which needs a totally different skill set.

So... does this mean that these things are always so well-defined in real-life? No. Heck no! The truth is that tons of businesses (and rookie freelancers) confuse them ALL. THE. TIME.

Seriously, it’s not even funny… especially if you’ve ever tried hiring/being hired on places like Upwork. So to dispel the confusion once and for all, here’s a quick rundown of 3 major types of writing, and when they’re needed the most:

C O N T E N T W R I T I N G

-Used to write pretty much anything
-The main goal is for people to read it
-It has to be enjoyable and easy to read
-Essential for content marketing - but not the best for making sales

D I R E C T R E S P O N S E / S A L E S / C O N V E R S I O N C O P Y W R I T I N G

-ALL about creating persuasive messages that sell or get people to DO something (click, subscribe, buy)
-Heavily based on Psychology, Behavioral Economics, and Human Decision Making
-It has a rigorous process: from customer research & data analysis - to wireframing, writing, A/B testing & iterating.
-It’s one of those $$$ skills that will serve you for the rest of your life

S E O W R I T I N G

-It’s basically content writing with the aim of ranking high in search engines
-Incorporates various short-tail AND long-tail keywords
-Crucial for SEO but not really optimized for conversions
-The backbone of any content marketing strategy

And there you have it. From now one, you’ll know the main differences between content writing vs copywriting, and avoid the costly mistake of confusing the TWO - regardless if you’re hiring someone or doing it yourself.

I have watched your video regarding the difference between content writing and copywriting, I find it very informative so that it tickled my imagination and aroused my interest in this particular type of writing, the copywriting. Since childhood, I already have a passion for writing so that I used to write poems, essays, and short stories when I was in High School that I became an occasional contributor to our school organ. During my stint in the government service organization, I also write Technical Papers like Development Plans, Feasibility Studies, etc. My English grammar is also close to excellent but I have the difficulty in speaking as I have an inborn defect in my speech mechanism. Truthfully, I am in a quandary as what type of writing should I focus on. and make money out of it.

This is great. The only thing is that content writers often employ SEO strategies to help quality content to rank well on google. In fact, a good blog content uses SEO writing strategies. Long-tail content with good SEO will likely rank higher on google than some shorter post filled with SEO words. This may be true for copy as well, but as a content writer, I have no idea.

You have explained it very well.. weldone ... I can say that because I must have gone through dozens on books on content and copywriting. You can sell in content writing too but that will take some time to understand one how to go about it placing offers.

One thing that discredit one of the books is you just mentioned the guy wrote it from prison... :) while there definitely can be different circumstances, it would be good to also say why he was there (otherwise half of the audience will just make a conclusion about the book on the spot :)
