The reason you procrastinate (It's not what you think) | Mel Robbins

One of the questions from the audience at a recent Q&A: "How do I stop putting off the things I know I need to do?"

Research shows that even though you relate to your procrastination as a way to avoid doing something, you actually put things on the back burner as a response to stress. In this video, I share how to handle that stress so you can start taking action and leave procrastination (and the guilt that comes with it) in the dust once and for all.

PS–Yes, I was sick with the flu when this video was filmed, but lots of self care happened before and after!

I also procrastinate because I'm scared of starting the job as I believe that I must execute it perfectly. Perfectionistic stress, triggering the coping mechanism of procrastination

I procrastinate everyday of every minute of my life. It’s to the point that I need to take a break from procrastination.

But if I wasn't procrastinating I wouldn't have found this video :)

Best thing I've ever heard on procrastination :) She is totally right. In fact, like a lot of paradoxes in life - it's often the people with the best intentions towards productivity that get the least done. Why? Because we STRESS about it.

When Mel said “you have to forgive yourself”. It triggered something in me. Instant overwhelming emotion. Thanks for helping me pin point what I need to focus on. 👍

Here's the classic "I don't usually comment but..." comment. However I have seen countless videos on self-help and procrastinating but no other one I have seen is this short, straight to the point and effective. This is the only video I have seen that actually identifies the root as something that is not laziness. The second you mentioned it, it made click in my brain. So thank you so much for this advice I will try to use this to combat my habit of procrastination.

So true! Procrastinators ate too hard on themselves, and perfectionists and with almost unrealistic goals, they simply begin procrastinating. It is important to settle for low pace in the beginning, and to not beat yourself up for achieving modest goals.

The reason behind why I procrastinate is, I spent all my time "thinking" How not to procrastinate. 😀

This made me cry. My inner voice reminds me constantly that I am lazy when I am procrastinating. And then I feel tremendous guilt for being lazy.
In the words of Pink, "change the voices in your head, make them like you, instead."
Thank you. Thank you. A million times thank you.

Someone else put it in a book, like this: "break the surface tension" - focus all your motivation on just starting - like jumping into cold water - the start is the hardestThen you get used to it

I’ve been procrastinating for the majority of my life. This is the first time I ever heard procrastination explained in this way. And I really am looking forward to watching more videos with Mel!

My way to start is using the pomodoro technique. Look it up on some yt videos and it will help to work for 25 minutes and then relax for some 5 mins. It's something i've been doing for days now. Sometimes helps and sometimes i end up procratinating but it helps to start some of your tasks

Forgiving yourself, that's beautiful.

Procrastination is 1) a survival strategy: do fun stuff first to get fired up 2) a method of deciding what's important when there are too many seemingly important things around.

Edit: if it were a 100% bad thing, evolution would long have taken care of it.
