About 5% to 10% of breast cancers are believed to be hereditary. Most inherited cases of breast cancer are associated with just two abnormal genes. These are the BRCA1 (BReast CAncer gene one) and the BRCA2 genes. However, not every case of breast cancer is associated with these two genes. Also, the presence or absence of abnormalities on these genes can affect the way cancer is treated. Survivor and advocate, Elyn Jacobs, describes the role genetics play in breast cancer in this video.
