Cardiovascular disease is an inflammatory disease necessitating a multidisciplinary approach. In addition to evaluating standard cardiovascular risk factors (diabetes/insulin resistance, obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and tobacco abuse), other inflammatory etiologies (toxins, infections) need to be considered. Further, genetic variations, called single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), along with environmental factors modulate phenotypic gene expression. The latter can impact the development and progression of cardiovascular disease as well as cardiovascular mortality. Understanding how genetic risk and environmental factors allows clinicians to individualize diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.

Learning Objectives:

1- Have a better understanding of some of the common genetic polymorphisms (SNPs) that impact cardiovascular disease

2- Review the importance of inflammation in cardiovascular disease

3- Using case studies, demonstrate a multidisciplinary approach to addressing cardiovascular risk
