The Carlos Castaneda Series - Book Review by Karen Bentley (featuring the wisdom of don Juan). @KarenBentley

Karen Bentley reviews a series of 8 books written by Carlos Castaneda that feature Castaneda's experience with a Yaqui Mexican native known as don Juan and Castaneda's introduction to warriorhood. Bentley explains why this series is a monumental gift to our world and how warriorhood is easily adapted to recovery from any substance, unwanted behavior, illness or life trauma. The concepts of warriorhood, stalking power, and disrupting habitual behaviors as a practice for acquiring power are particularly helpful. Bentley not only introduces the viewer to Castaneda and his work, but also to the controversies that follow him around.

The eight Castaneda books in the warriorhood series were published over a 20 year period, from 1968 to 1987. Each book describes a different aspect of Castaneda's extraordinary tutelage into warriorhood by the nagual and sorcerer don Juan, a Yaqui Mexican native. According to don Juan, warriorhood is the world of power, discipline, forbearance, sobriety and cubic centimeters of chance. Don Juan claims that when enough power is claimed and stored, a warrior is able to accomplish non-ordinary feats.

Castaneda's first book, The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge, was published 55 years ago. It's still #5 in Native American Religion, still #9 in Shamanism, and #11,391 of all books sold on Amazon. For those who aren't savvy about book-selling statistic, this enduring outperformance is truly amazing. The reason: Don Juan's voice and message is as fresh and profound today as it was when it first appeared. Many others try to copycat Castaneda's ethnographic research style and his formula for extracting wisdom from a native of some kind, but for me (Karen Bentley), nothing packs the same potent punch. Don Juan is the star of this show, and he for sure had me at hello.

Time Magazine called Castaneda "the Godfather of the New Age." John Lennon praised his work. The eight books in the Castaneda series include:

1968: The Teachings of Don Juab: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge
1971: A Separate Reality: Further Conversations with Don Juan
1972: Journey to Ixtlan: The Lessons of Don Juan
1974: Tales of Power
1977: The Second Ring of Power (OUT OF PRINT)
1981: The Eagles Gift
1984: The Fire From Within
1987: The Power of Silence: Further Lessons of Don Juan

I'm an Ojibway Native American and have witnessed true indescribable events and acts with actual medicine men in my community with real knowledge that's been passed down for a millinea. I'm sorry mam, I love Carlos works as much as the next person but you're giving him way too much credit lol. He was a charlatan, but I still read all the books every few years as they're a fun journey. Albeit imaginary.
