Old school Japanese geometry

Yeah mon! That's what this is, a "Mon" aka "Mondokoro” or “Kamon". It's a Japanese family crest. I thought one with three cranes looked particularly sick so I decided to have a go at drawing it.

This crest has been part of Japanese History as a crest during the Shogunate Era of Japan. Before Emperor Meiji took the throne and the beginning of the Meiji Restoration.

I loved geometry in school. But my art teacher always emphasized on free hand drawings. Therefore I never learnt this amazing technique. Thank you so much for this video.

Awesome! Good job! I draw mandalas too, and sometimes "extract" a specific design - always fun when that appears, when you discover it. I would sometimes call the base geometry lines "God's fancy graph paper." I have not drawn for many years. I have not been inspired. Low grade depression permeates. Pictured the structure of the universe while you were drawing this. Crazy how it looks random but its so vast it actually could be symmetrical. Don’t know much about it but it blows my mind to think like that

Whats also really cool about this drawing is that it has a Triquetra knot in the middle from the Celtics and kind of connects it to the symbolism of the Crane.

Nice video, and you are really good! Geometry is one of our way to read reality and to try an interpretation of what we see, it’s not reality, it’s just a mathematical interpretation of it, it remains very fascinating.
