I just want to point out the Chinese student wrote faster than the American student and also relied on gimmicky tricks that don't apply under all circumstances, so while she completed the problem faster, it does not mean at all that she is a better student. The American student actually broke down the problem logically and understood it from the inside out before solving it, which is a method that when applied to other problems of a different nature does not leave her unprepared.

I am Chinese but I can tell you that we don't even know this method.We are good at calculating because Chinese language has an advantage in numbers' pronunciation, and all Chinese primary students should recite 九九乘法表, which can enable you to work out the simple calculations very fast.🤘🏼

Many children learn how to break down large numbers on their own in multiplication. This is literally head math, except on a board.
My process: 12*12 = 144, 2*12 = 24, 144 + 24 = 168

both are chinese kids. chinese, japanese, singaporean, korean and vietnamese kids are really good in math
