2022 BMW iX | Review & Road Test

Показать описание
For the latest BMW iX pricing and information:
Joining BMWs I-line of electric vehicles, the iX is their first all electric midsize SUV. Well, they call it an SAV (staggered graphic: Sports. Activity. Vehicle.), and you can even call it a crossover, but I’ll call it an SUV. The two versions of the iX offered right now are the xDrive50, which is our tester here, or the more powerful M60 model. Both of which have some interesting exterior elements like golden bronze trim, holes in the doors which hide the door popper, sleek body profile with rising belt line, slim stylish taillights and headlights, And yes, a kidney grille that is the topic of everyone’s BMW forum discussions.
Apart from its polarizing styling the iX has a drag coefficient of just 0.25, and a dual motor setup allowing standard AWD. The infrastructures of both iX models are comprised of a 111.5 kWh lithium ion battery pack with DC fast charging capability up to 195 kW.
Which means in ideal conditions, you can get an additional 90 miles worth of range from a fast charger in just 10 minutes with an initial charging state of 10% and That fast charging can get you from 10 to 80% in around 35 minutes… so if you really wanna go play with that self healing grille you’ll have plenty of time because I still won’t do it.
The position of the battery pack gives the iX a low center of gravity which adds to it’s driving dynamics, but surprisingly it did nothing for the cargo area out back. With around 35 cu-ft of space, it trails the Tesla Model X, but there is a 40-20-40 folding rear seat configuration that will yield a total of around 78 cu-ft.
Before getting in, you’ll notice in the rear and on the sides the carbon fibre-reinforced plastic, a material mix that helps minimize weight and increases rigidity. Hopping inside, it seems as though the cargo room has been traded for great rear passenger space. The seats don’t slide or recline, but the flat floor allows legs to stretch out, and you’re greeted with USB-C outlets behind the seat, and this opening which allows you to add BMW accessories like laptop mounts or coat hangers.
Keeping you entertained and informed is this large high resolution curved display consisting of a configurable 12.3 inch digital gauge cluster and 14.9 inch infotainment touchscreen slightly angled towards the driver. The iX uses BMW’s iDrive 8 operating system which is responsive, provides good info, and can also be controlled with the crystal knob on the center console.
Well the best place to think about life is on the road. The iX xDrive50 pushes out 516 horsepower 564 lb-ft of torque, and a range of up to 324 miles. Upgrade to the M60 model if you’d like a stout 610 hp, 749 lb-ft. of torque, and up to 280 miles of range.
If you’re looking to increase efficiency, there’s a one pedal drive mode, and the option to select your level of regen braking, which includes adaptive regen that uses radar to determine when to coast and when to brake more aggressively. There’s even a “My Modes” button that allows the driver to customize the sounds characteristics of the iX to their liking.
As big as the iX is, it has a playful demeanor on demand, with pleasant road manners in the meantime. The low center of gravity in conjunction with the suspension and all wheel drive system inspires confidence when cornering and that instant torque makes accelerating out of a turn an addictive occurrence. And when you’re done hauling booty down the road, the available 4 wheel steering at lower speeds help with maneuverability around tight spots.
Pricing for the iX now starts at (graphic: $84,100) plus a destination charge for the xDrive50 model. With that you’ll get features including 20 inch wheels, LED lighting, power tailgate, large electrochromatic shade tinting sunroof, 4-zone climate control, synthetic leather seating with heated front seats, 6 usb ports, and large curved display.
