How to boot your mac from a USB bootable device

The OS on my Mac recently stopped working and in order to fix the issue I needed to use a bootable USB drive to reinstall the OS. I'm going to take you through a quick run through on how to boot your mac from a usb drive.

thanks so much! This might work for me because it's the only command that actually works on my Imac g5. It doesn't work recovery mode or another commands, and I really need to boot from USB.

So heres the thing I have made my mac complete windows but I have no bios when I press option it won't take me to that page it will directly launch windows I want to boot into my usb as I am downloading Linux any ideas what could I do

what about if you use another type keyboard and you don't see the OPTION button like dell?
