How to Install the MrCool DIY Multi Zone

Installation of any MRCOOL HVAC product must comply with all applicable codes and regulations. The service of a certified and trained electrical technician may be required for the installation process.

With the MRCOOL DIY Multi-zone, you can heat and cool up to four spaces in your home or workplace, all with one condenser. And, as the name suggests, you can do it yourself!

First you will need to know what size unit you need for each room you plan to heat and cool. The DIY Multizone can have 9,000 BTU air handlers all the way to 24,000 BTUS.

You will need to make sure you are pairing the correct condenser with the number of air handlers and sizes, as there are multiple configurations depending on your needs.

With each air handler you will find a wall template, which helps you line up the mounting plate for the air handler. The mounting plate is connected to the back of the air handler. Just remove the screw and pull it off.

Once removed, use the template, a level, and provided screws to place the wall mount.

You will need a 3.5 inch hole saw for the communication wire and line set for each air handler.

Now, feed the communication wire through the holes you’ve drilled, along with the line set connected to the air handler. Then, mount the air handlers.

Then, connect the provided insulated line sets together.

Screw the fittings together by hand, then use two fixed wrenches to makes sure the line set is secure.

Extra line sets are available for purchase if the default line set length is not long enough for your set up. With additional line sets, you get a coupler kit for connecting the line sets together. Connect these the same way you connected the line set near the air handler.

Once all the air handlers are mounted and connected, it’s time to connect the line set to outdoor condenser.

For those using the larger 24,000 BTU air handler, you will have to replace the connected couplings on the condenser to adequately connect the line set to port A. As before, connect the line set connections with your hand, then use two fixed wrenches to secure them tightly. Once that is finished with each of your air handlers, use an Allen wrench to open the valves.

If you are not familiar with wiring this type of unit, it may be important to consult an electrician.

Be sure to spray soapy water on all the line set connections to check for leaks.

Once all is connected, the MRCOOL DIY Multi-zone is ready to go. You can also add additional accessories such as the MRCOOL Mini Stat, or you can connect the Multizone DIY to work with your Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant for each of the rooms you’re heating and cooling.

The MRCOOL DIY Multi-zone is the perfect way to heat and cool multiple rooms with ease and efficiency.

The future of HVAC is DIY! I am renovating a stone house built on a low crawlspace, and the quote to replace just the duct work exceeded the cost of an entire MRCOOL system! I've been watching your videos for months, and I think this new zoned system is going to be the way I go.

All my questions were answered in the comments. I can uninstall lines and move them at a later time no problem, I can hook up additional zones later no problem and I would need a condensate pump to run the lines up through the attic. Thank you.

Why isn't there a thermostat for ducted mini splits? The stock one it comes with doesn't have a daily program option or even displays the current room temp. It is basically only a manual on and iff switch.

So it seems after watching a few videos that these systems require downward gravity fed lines to work properly. What if i have a room which requires a ceiling cassette or a wall mounted control unit that isn't an exterior wall? can i go up a short distance and then go thru the attic? How is this handled?

hey @MRCOOL do you have any line set covers large enough to accommodate two line sets at once? I have two bedrooms next to each other, and each would be taking the same path back to the outside unit

Are these OK to supplement my existing central air system? I have an addition to my home that does not have central air ducts and 1 room furthest away from the central air unit that does not get enough air blowing into it in the winter and summer months thus these two rooms are always hotter or colder than the rest of my home.

Do you have to have all zones connected initially for the system to function? I would like to have heat in the house I’m remodeling but only use 2 of the 4 zones until those other rooms are ready.

I’m buying a multizone unit with 4 air handlers. 3 of the handlers will be on the same side of the house and the other 1 will be on the complete opposite side. I have decking and stuff on the side with 1 unit. Could I run the drain tube out where that 1 handler is like normal and then from the same handler run the lineset up into the attic across the house to the other side with the 3 handlers and down straight to the condenser?

How come they didn’t pull a vacuum on the system?

Wondering if there is a remote or app capability for controlling these units?

How much room do you need around the Condenser outside....how far from the house does it need to be.

Almost finished with my install. Any recommendation on what to do with the extra length of control wiring from each unit? Can I cut it down and re-attach the spade terminals or get new terminals? btw would be helpful for us electrical DIYers if you made it clear that the whip from the unit to the disconnect is not included and that it needs spade terminals on the end to connect to the unit. This caused a few unforeseen trips to home depot. Also, the Youtubers you provided the units to as a test review received a little kit of wrenches and a hole saw, which made me assume they all came with one. That's on me for not checking but thought it's important to convey the experience I've had so far.

What are the options on line set lengths?

you don’t evacuate or pressure test the line sets? Hmmm seems smart.
