I love it how Bioware finally put more character development into Shepard on an emotional scale, it really shows that Shepard is under a massive amount of stress, plus the PTSD of being blown up in ME2, then having the fate of the galaxy rest on his hands in ME3, because deep down, he knew he was fighting a losing battle, even if he said he was hopeful.

i like how this part of me3 gave Shepards character some new traits.. we never experienced him/her going through memories in such an emotional way before

I walk through a cold forest of grey, my name echoing, whispers through the wind, the shadows of those I could not save standing close, A manifestation of all my fears.. I could not save them, I could not save myself..

"Shepard..."
"Ahh... Shepard... excellent timing...."
"Go back, get Williams, and get out of here. It's the right choice and you know it Ash...."
"...does this unit have a soul...?"

"...Shepard!..."

Good. Now I can cry myself to sleep every night.

I feel like Mass Effect 3 is the first game where you lose, like every ending is not exactly a happy ending.

Shepard has the weight of the galaxy on his/her shoulders. The child represents everyone he/she can't save. I think these scenes are really brilliant and show the gravity of Shepard's situation.  I don't think these scenes were at all out of place. I'd have to say that if you think it's out of place then that's pretty much completely wrong. I've seen no compelling arguments that would state otherwise.

Part of ME3 is that Shepard is deteriorating, kid or not, IT or not. A huge amount of soldiers have PTSD, and look at what Shep lost. The dream sequence was good, and could have been brilliant. Story of ME3 as a whole I guess.

Is this just a slowed down version of leaving Earth?

I love listening to this.... every time it makes me reflect on all the choices i have made in my life, good or bad, just like in the game, which led me to this exact moment right now, typing this comment.

There was a choice. There was no choice. I could have saved them. I couldn't save them. I had their lives in my hands. They all slipped away through my fingers, dripping down into a puddle of blood and madness. Now, I shed my tears in a forest of emptiness and loneliness, waiting for someone to hear my story. Someone who can give my cold, dying heart the warmth of peace.

Nightmares of the Shepards:
Earthborn - Running down an endless back-alley after after the boy (in this dream, a younger version of your created Shepard)
Colonist - Running from Batarian pirates past other colonist's bodies and ruins
Spacer - The Normandy slow crumbles around you as you try to escape

Sole Survivor - Flee the thresher maw as it devours your squad on Akuze
War Hero - Fend off pirates for a certain amount of time on Elysium
Ruthless - Capturing and executing pirates on Torfan

Seriously if they had incorporated your characters pre-service background and psyche profile into these sequences, it would of added an extra layer of immersion and flesh out how your Shepard came to be the man/woman they are. Such a missed opportunity.

There’s nothing worse than having the weight of the galaxy on your shoulders, and the knowledge that you can’t save them all.

Seeing Shepard finally break hurt a lot already, since it's sad seeing someone finally reach their breaking point. But then when you hear the voices of your fallen companions, you just get hit so hard with despair. Shepard definitely felt like it was his fault that people are dead.

It was truly strange when I heard this and Mordin whispering "Shepherd" totally spooked me.
