Greek video lesson 5: Two nouns with different meaning in singular and plural

In this Greek lesson, I decided to speak about 2 nouns that when they are in the plural they have a different meaning than when they are in the singular. Watch the lesson and learn how to use it. Moreover, your Cypriot accent is very nice to hear and I enjoy when it is noticeable in some words.

Related to this matter, I don't know whether it is too much outside the scope of this chanel, but I think it could also be interesting to do one or a couple of videos on the Cypriot Greek dialect (special features, pronunciation, typical words and expressions...) since not too much material is available about Greek dialects on the internet. Only some websites, but the majority of them without any video or sound material.

Andiamo allora alla nostra lezione. La settimana passata abbiamo visto alcuni sostantivi che sono sempre al plurale anche se si riferiscono solo ad una cosa. Questa settimana vedremo 2 sostantivi che hanno significato diverso quando sono al singolare e significato diverso quando sono al plurale. La prima parola che ha significato diverso dal singolare al plurale è la parola diakopi - diakopes. Allora cosa significa la parola diakopì? Significa disconnessione, interruzione o pausa. Bene, cioè possiamo dire "Ieri abbiamo avuto (una) interruzione della corrente elettrica". Cosa succede però quando la parola è al plurale? Cosa significa diakopes? La parola diakopes significa vacanze o vacation in inglese americano. Cioè dirai: "to kalokeri tha pao diakopes stin Ellada" che significa "in estate andrò in vacanza in Grecia". La seconda parola che ha un significato diverso dal singolare al plurale è la parola èkptosi - ekptòsis. Dirai "agorasa afto to forema me èkptosi" che significa "Ho comprato questo vestito con (lo) sconto". Mentre quando usiamo questa parola al plurale "agorasa afto to forema stis ekptòsis" significa "ho comprato questo vestito ai saldi". Perciò quando usiamo questa parola al singolare ci riferiamo alla riduzione del prezzo di un prodotto, mentre quando la usiamo al plurale ci riferiamo al periodo in cui tutti i prezzi dei prodotti vengono ridotti".
