I actually learned a ton from duolingo french, starting from nothing (I took spanish in high school). I was able to order and do other basic transactions in France, and I can understand french film/tv/videos. But you have to do a LOT, like maybe an hour a day on duolingo. It helps to read all the sentences out loud too. After I got the basics down I moved on to french media such as podcasts and films. I think I've done pretty well!

I actually learned french from duolingo and still learning and trust me i can speak french way better, faster, and with correct pronunciation...
Its not always abiut chien and chat thise are basic sentences for beginners but as you progress in duolingo french course... More practical and realistic sentences are given to you.. for e.g
How to order food..
How to talk to people at work
How to use past tense (imparfait)
How to express feelings
How to express opinions etc...
DUOlingo provides what you need but its your responsibility to gather basic knowledge about the language you're gonna learn

Don’t play down Duolingo my man, it’s an awesome learning tool. I have been using to study French for a couple of years now along You Tube videos, and I understand a lot now and I can make small conversations. Don’t knock it, I know this is a parody, but Duolingo is great.
