I believe that Queen Mary, the wife of George V and mother of both Edward VIII and George VI, was also said to have died of lung cancer. She smoked as well, though she was older at almost 86 when she died in 1953.

My father died exactly the same way as George VI. Only difference is my dad didn't smoke.

Mary 1's mother, Catherine of Aragon, had also passed from cancer( heart cancer likely while Mary from ovarian cancer)

Philip literally wasn't "into" her. He said her pregnancy was more like to end in a "burst of wind" than an actual child.

Thank goodness they caught the cancer early for king Charles

Cancer is a very common condition. One in two people will be diagnosed according to statistics (I assume in the western world). Royalty are humans so it’s hardly surprising several will get cancer. But it’s not a death sentence for many cancers. I’d be more worried if Charles had pancreatic cancer though

Sorry to hear it happened to him. He's a wonderful man. When my daughter was 8 years old, on her own she wrote to him.
He wrote a personnel letter back to her. By him doing that, it shows a lot . It did a lot for her. To me that shows everything.

The nice thing for them they will get the best medical treatment available compared to a lot people who have to deal with the health care system.

Cancer will ALWAYS run in the Royal family.

Surely, it now runs in most families though this may not always have been the case. There are more risk factors now.

I'm not trying to jinx anyone but William especially Harry should really be careful and keep track of their health.

Cancer is very common, even in this more modern era of more accurate diagnosis. Some of these are behaviorally related, others not. I can point to at least 4 cancers in three generations of my family. It is quite likely that many royals have had cancer, but "tragic history" is pushing it a bit. The difference is that treatment has improved so greatly that one expects those in the current generation to do much better.

I’ve often wondered how many cases of “consumption” (tuberculosis) back then were actually lung cancer. Other than fever that is more common in TB, the symptoms are almost the same — cough, weight loss, coughing up blood, fairly rapid decline if untreated. Even today, in countries like India where both diseases are present, there are multiple papers discussing how they find lung cancer patients that were treated for TB instead. Now, cancer diagnosis is often thru things like bronchoscope inspection, biopsies, CT, chest X-ray, thing they just couldn’t do back then. Both diseases can spread to bone. Death can come from lung hemorrhage or respiratory failure. No way to know, but with the heavy smoking and particulate air pollution, I bet a lot of the “TB” deaths were undiagnosed lung cancer. The things you wonder about when your insomnia kicks in and you wake up at 4 am and turn on YouTube…..
