I have always read that Rosemary's mother was not aware she was going to have a lobotomy and that her father had it done because she was at an age that she was becoming sexual and there was concern she would either be taken advantage of or would become promiscuous and the surgery was supposed to get rid of her urges and violent mood swings. She was around 20 at the time.

Jessica Kellgren-Fozard has a great video about this, in it she explains that Rosemary was pretty independent before the lobotomy, she even attended a Montessori school(I think), and was tutored by nuns and teachers. She enjoyed going to the theatre, dancing fashion. Even her reading and writing levels were quite decent, around the ones of a 10 yo. But after the lobotomy they stripped away all of her personality, interests, abilities… they took away her soul and left her a shell of the being she was before( for those who don’t know, a lobotomy aims to separate the frontal lobe from the rest of the brain, and the frontal lobe is responsible for personality, emotion regulation, voluntary motor skills and language). All of this because she wasn’t what they deemed to be enough…

They did this because they considered her “promiscuous” and a potential embarrassment since the family had big political aspirations. She is the reason we have the Special Olympics. Her sister, Eunice, was the founder.

Actually what caused her original developmental/educational delays before the lobotomy, was because when the mother was giving birth, the doctor wasnt there yet so the nurse panicked and kept shoving rosemary up into the birth canal, cutting off the oxygen to her brain. So the lobotomy just worsened something that could've been remedied with therapy.
