Iron Deficiency anemia occurs when the iron deficiency is severe enough to diminish erythropoiesis and lead to the development of anemia. Iron deficiency can be caused by extensive blood loss, decreased absorption, poor intake or during states of increased demand such as pregnancy or growth. The important investigations for iron deficiency anemia include blood picture and film, serum iron levels ,serum ferritin and TIBC, serum soluble transferrin receptor levels. It takes about six months of oral iron therapy to restore Hb levels and replenish iron stores.
