What Foods Trigger Diverticulitis?

Diverticulitis is a serious medical condition that occurs when pouches grow in the lining of your intestine and then become inflamed. These pouches, called diverticula, develop when weak spots in your intestinal wall bulge out. Most often, such pouches grow in the large intestine, or colon.

Certain foods tend to promote the growth of inflammation in these pouches. Some foods which are normally good for digestion should be avoided when you have an episode ("flare up") of diverticulitis.

Fiber-rich foods you limit or forego, especially during a flare up, include:

* Beans and legumes such as navy beans, chickpeas, lentils, and kidney beans.

* Vegetables.

* Fruits.

* Whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, oats, amaranth, spelt, and bulgur.

Research suggests that a diet containing the following foods is likely to put you at a higher risk for developing diverticulitis.

* Fried foods

* Foods that are high in sugar and fat.

* Full-fat dairy

* Red meat

* Refined grains

Diverticula often exist in your colon without becoming inected or inflamed: a condition known as diverticulosis. It is less serious than diverticulitis, and it becomes more common as you get older. Approximately half of Americans over age 60 have diverticulosis, and most are unaware of it..

I have been diagnosed with this. It’s early and I don’t have symptoms. I don’t drink or eat dairy and maybe that’s why🤷‍♀️

My doctor told me that antibiotics won't help my diverticulitis flare up and after describing my symptoms (constipation, diarrhea, chronic pain, fever and vomiting) he prescribed me fybogel, less than 8 hours later I was taken to A&E where they found that I had a perforated bowel with some intra abdominal leakage and I spent the next 5 days in hospital.

There is no proof that any food "triggers" Diverticulitis. Most people, including myself, think it's the food you ate just before you got an attack, and it can't be further from the truth.

A couple weeks ago, I had the full laxative prep over the weekend for a colonoscopy on Monday. I was COMPLETELY cleaned out! They found a moderate amount of diverticulosis -- but no polyps. I would like to know how to rid myself of the damage so far??

Seeds and nuts.. high fat foods opinion… garlic…. brown bread apples and pears to name only a few…. basically anything that’s hard to chew will intern start to eat you…. ice cream be like a ghastly villain if you suffer from this gut condition.. ice cream is a truly pointless food in my blessed opinion because it’s just fat and sugar you’re ingesting but many love it so and can’t resist it and so they will still indulge even though they have this issue with their innards… I detest ice cream… don’t care for it at all actually… I prefer savory / sour food and not that sickly sweet stuff that’s all the rage nowadays ie cinnamon rolls bubble tea etc etc yada yada blah blah kerching hahahah… on a serious note diverticulitis be a really painful condition depending on its severity but it’s one of those health conditions that can be cured by omitting certain foods that will cause flare ups and by eating the correct diet.. FODMAP is the way forward for these individuals who have been diagnosed with this disease (is it a disease or is it just a gut condition) caused by eating too much of the wrong foods way too often… I don’t know… perhaps.. probably… maybe… who knows… not me… my guess is it’s a disease but one that is totally manageable through diet alone

Thank you Wander Woman

Bye for now;)

I'M HERE CUZ OF MY FRIEND HAVING TO HAVE SURGERY FROM DIVERTICULITIS. I WAS TOLD I WAS STARTING TO SHOW SIGNS OF IT AS WELL. I'M WONDERING THO, IF ANYONE KNOWS, WHAT PROBLEMS COMPLICATE IT, SAY IF YOU'VE HAD YOUR GALLBLADDER REMOVED? -- I'M ASSUMING THE LACK OF A PARTICULAR ORGAN MAY AFFECT THE OTHER PARTS IN SOME WAY- SOONER OR LATER. - WELL, I DIDN'T FOLLOW MY DIET TOO WELL& WONDER IF THIS IS THE RESULT.
