I Trained With The Bicycle Patrol For a Day

Could you outrun the bicycle cops on a mountain bike? Maybe, but they have radios. Besides, that's not really what the bike patrol is for. Bicycles make it easier to navigate through crowds, traffic, events, and college campuses, which make a bike patrol a great supplement to squad cars in a town or city. Chief Andy LeBeau of the Boone Police Department trains his own officers personally, and I must admit—he's great at it. Not only does he basically make them play footdown, but he also teaches them to ride down stairs and perform cyclocross maneuvers over obstacles.

Thank you so much to the Boone Police Department

Casual video call with Hans no-way Rey. Those bike cops weren't nearly impressed enough with that moment.

When my sister told me she was in a YouTube video today I didn’t think it was gonna be my favorite mountain biking channel, nor did I know she was training to be a bicycle cop 😭😭😭

I believe every police officer should be required to do at least one rotation on a bike patrol. The benefits seem incalculable.
- improved cardiovascular fitness for the whole squad
- improved mental state (something sorely lacking it seems among many officers)
- better understanding and mental map of the built environment (think about all the things you miss behind the wheel of a car)
- more empathy for cyclists and pedestrians
- Improved response times in dense areas
- more opportunities to have healthy interactions with the public (builds better relationships with police)
- saves police departmentments boatloads of cash

I could go on, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

Two bicycle cops stopped by our bmx track (NOVA BMX) the other day. We took a break and got them to ride the track, twice. It was awesome. They were great sports about it.

I'm the chief training officer for a new campus EMS 911 program at my alma mater, and we're rolling out our program of student-EMTs on bicycles responding to 911 calls this winter.

Since we're on bikes, I figured we should have some bike training, and this actually gave me some ideas for what to incorporate (slow race, stairs, and curb mounting)

Really cool video, seth!

I have once seen a bike patrol cop chasing a suspect - I was working gate security at a college football game and there was a fan who was drunk and threatening, so I call for police backup to my gate on my radio. The police officer arrived on a bike, quite quickly, and as soon as she was in sight, the drunk guy took off running. The officer had to dodge another fan in the crowded area near the gate, and caught a pedal on a cement column - but as her bike went down, she basically took a leap off of it, landed running, and took off after the drunk guy. I thought I would never know how it ended for sure, except that a few minutes later, that office along with three others brought that guy back into view outside the gate, where the drunk guy decided it would be a good idea to take a swing at the officers. He was arrested, taken away to jail, and I assume woke up in jail the next day with a wicked hangover and ALL the regrets, as well as a collection of charges against him.

13:49 The Cops didnt believe Seth when he said he is cooking some meth. If Bobo said that to the cops he wouldve been arrested on the spot.✌️🤭

When I was with the Ft Worth police department back in the late nineties I enquired about the bike patrol. Found out they were kind of an elite group and not easy to get into. I eventually went on to downhill/Freeride for several decades.

An officer sprinting at me on a 3t would scare the hell out of me

More departments across the world need to implement this idea into their communities. Like the Chief said, you are more accessible to the community and, therefore, more approachable.

I'm a Bike Medic at my EMS agency and I loved taking the BERT classes! The box, and key hole were my favorite. As long as you look over your shoulder and ride your brake a bit you can pedal in circles all day without hitting the cones.
