I’ve been investing for a while, but I always hear people talk about how mutual funds are a must-have. Can anyone recommend two solid options that every investor should consider? I’ve been burned before, so I want to avoid risky choices.

I guess you simplied it for an average investor, but there are all types of investor. Some would want to invest only in largecaps, some wont prefer etfs, and some might go for hybrid funds. But still, thanks for making it simple for average investor. No one does it usually.

Small cap

Elss for tax saving.

What about small cap and ELSS fund? I think Index fund, ELSS and small cap full wiill be ideal.

My 2 cents after 5 years of active investing:

Have two debt funds for 20-30% of your portfolio
1. Short term for emergency purposes (1-5 lakhs max)
2. Long term - this can be moved in or out of equity as per market conditions

Equity (70-80% of total portfolio)
1. Small cap - 50%
2. Flex Cap - 20-30%
3. Large Cap -20-30%
4. International Fund - 20-30% in place of flexi or large cap.
I personally prefer to avoid large cap funds as they seldom beat Nifty index.

Sensex 30 index fund by Tata is much better than nifty 50 index fund offered by other AMCs
