*_Should cruise tips be mandatory / forced / required?_*

If tips are mandatory, by definition that would not be a tip - that would just part of the cruise fare.

Tipping culture in the U.S. is out of control.

Here's the thing, John's response would sound completely genuine and it makes sense, BUT, he is speaking from the company that could pay those crew members the extra money they are expecting us to fill the gaps for. Because cruise lines have added not just a expectation of a tip but a set rate, it lets them say things like, "I can't believe you wouldn't pay these people what they deserve, " Yet they are the ones paying them and they aren't currently paying them what they deserve.

If the cruise line makes tipping mandatory, then it's not a tip, it's the customer paying a portion of employee wages.

I'm with you, Tony. Crew members deserve the tips. I've been on 28+ cruises on 3 different lines. The service is always the best!
Cruise lines need to have gratuities included in the price of cruise. Cruisers can always give extra cash.

Don't forget that 18% is added to every drink order, including the coffee bar and room service.

I always remove my gratuities. That said I ALWAYS tip cash as I go. Why do I do this? From talking to numerous cruise line employees, I simply don't trust that they actually receive the automatic gratuities. Why do I not trust it? I have yet to find a crew member that trusts it! I literally go on a minimum of 40 cruises per year and have had this conversation with numerous Carnival cruise lines crew members. Carnivals gratuity breakdown even includes an "other services" category that part of the gratuity goes to. A little too vague for me, that could be going to the CEO. I'll be sticking with cash.

Just another reason to get rid of this tipping culture! Pay employees well and raise the price of the service/cruise, eto to allow good employee pay. I will pay mandatory gratuities, but would just rather to just pay it as part of the cruise. Ultimately it is not my job to pay employees for doing their job, it is the responsibility of the employer.

As a Brit we don’t have a tipping culture we feel the cruise line should pay employees a decent living wage and people who keep tipping are encouraging them to pay their staff a lower wage you should stop it’s unfair on the staff, however brits do tip anyone who goes the extra, but don’t want to be shamed into it

We always prepay the gratuity and then tip our cabin attendant and anyone else that goes above and beyond!

The US tipping culture is a sickness. It need to stop. Pay people the salary they shall have, and leave the stupid tips system die. Gratuities shall be an agreement between the company and their employees. Include it in the fare. I´m pissed by this BS system.

I tip when I’m in the casino whoever is bringing my drinks I tip if I sit down in a restaurant, I tip my housekeeping immediately. I don’t think I should have to be told who to tip.

A few years back, I was told by a crew member that their pay is based on the minimum wage of their home country. Just another way for corporations to squeeze the little guy.

I’m a tipper, taught by my dad. He grew up in the restaurant family business before going to dental school. My sister and nephew were also in the bar and restaurant business. They relied on tips. I prepay for my cruises but always tip more depending on service. I usually give 50-100 to the room attendant and the dining staff if I have the same crew. I have no problem with it at all.

This is why we tip directly to the employee.

Let it as it is. My family of 4 removes 2 and tip out probably triple In cash to room steward, main dining host and anyone we have regular interaction with that make our cruise experience extra ordinary. Some may not agree with this but it's how we've always done it.

My parents warned me that when you cruise, you get a batch of envelopes and you have to put money in all of them for all the crew... so I expect to pay tips. I didn't start cruising until the envelopes became passe. I'm glad of that. Let the cruise line pay a fair wage and let the fare reflect that.

As a tipped employee, I appreciate you explaining so clearly how unacceptable it is to not tip a tipped employee. It's infuriating to have people belittle skill sets I've built throughout my career and deem the service I've provided as worthless.
