Saw: The Complete History of Amanda Young | Horror History

There are secrets from Amanda's past that help explain why she defies Jigsaw near the end of her story. Let's analyze her entire history!

John Kramer, the criminal widely known a "Jigsaw" planned to have one of his disciples take over for him when he could no longer carry out the traps. At one point, the front runner to be his successor was a young woman named Amanda Young.

Amanda was the first Jigsaw victim to survive one of his tests by passing and escaping her trap. She was able to get out of the "reverse bear-trap", so John took her under his wing. But there would be much more that happened with Amanda, leading up to her eventual betrayal of her beloved master.

In this video I'll be breaking down the entire life of Amanda Young, from her rough childhood, to her years as a patient of the Homeward Bound Clinic to her improbable run as Jigsaw's right hand chick. I'll also psychoanalyze her "very serious" case of Jealous Girlfriend Syndrome (or JGS) and all of the factors that played into her downfall during the Gideon Meat Plant games with Lynn Denlon in April of 2006.

In Saw II, Amanda says that she started using drugs in prison, after Matthews planted evidence to have her convicted. So I don’t know if Matthews did that to punish her for killing the Kramer’s baby; she was already an addict at that point. Love this content, though!! Always here with the hits!

Personally I always read Amanda’s feelings towards John as more paternal- he saved her, protects her, cherishes her, and she had a bad childhood. It’s likely she doesn’t know what a healthy relationship between a father and a daughter is, so her actions are purely platonic, stemming from less “jealous girlfriend” syndrome and more “only child being introduced to a new baby” syndrome.

You forgot the best part, where she gets chosen by the Entity in her death and became my main in Dead by Deadlight.
In all seriousness, she was always my favorite character in the Saw franchise.

Don't forget that Amanda's actress, Shawnee Smith, was in pain, especially during the first "Saw": during the first "Saw", she shot her scenes while sick as a dog with the flu, and during "Saw II", she was actually 4 months pregnant at the time, but didn't let onto anyone except Darren Lynn Bousman at the time. It only got out publicly because her daughter let slip.

Amanda is my most favorite character in SAW series. Very vulnerable, very emotional type, yet determined. It's just sad she couldn't overcome her emotions to the moment of her death.

To this day, Amanda's reveal as a Jigsaw apprentice was an incredible plot twist, and I feel John took in Amanda specifically because he saw her as the child he could finally have. I believe he sincerely wanted her to take over his legacy above all others but because of his mastery in GAME THEORY (yes I've been binging all the Saw Historys), he had to have backups in case Amanda was unworthy or fell through somehow. Convoluted as it became, I still really enjoy the overall idea of John essentially trying to build the family he lost in his disciples.

Even though they were all criminals he'd committed the most serious crimes by being a drug dealer and rather than working with the others to find the antidotes he just started killing them and read the numbers to save himself.

While I love this video, I think calling Amanda a "jealous girlfriend" is a bit insulting. She (is absolutely not a good person by any means, but) was already a deeply troubled young woman before meeting John. Addiction is a disease, but could've been a symptom of something like BPD instead of her main issue. BPD has symptoms like hostility, mood swings, and impulsive behavior. Then she nearly dies and when she is most emotionally vulnerable, John swoops in an manipulates the hell out of her. Then you add in Mark also pulling strings. She was far more than a marionette acting on the will of others. She was a bad person who made the decisions to hurt people. But she had so much more going on mentally than "jealous girlfriend syndrome"
