Hi. What is the brownish color around the vent? Mine now has that and I don’t know what it is. It looks to be coming from the weight? Thank you.

A few points. It’s an actual hiss sound that you are looking for, not just steam. What is actually happening is that the air in the pot is being replaced by that steam. You will note that the pressure gauge stays at zero for the most part when doing this, so no, your trying to build up pressure at all, but rather as I said, replacing the air with steam. Only when you put on a weight will you start to build up pressure. It doesn’t take away from your message though, yes, you must vent for 10 minutes.

What do you mean you’re building up the pressure in the pot? Or that you’re “building up the steam”. I don’t understand. How can you build up pressure or steam when you are releasing all of it.

Good video Diane and a good explanation and a good picture of it too of how much you want that steam to be coming out.

Thank you for this! I am new to pressure canning and just purchased a Presto canner. I cannot seem to get that steady flow of steam to begin the 10 minutes of venting. This is a brand new canner on a gas stove. Is there something you can recommend i may or may not be doing? Thank you.

Good tip. Always always read the directions or review them.

Okay I have a question, what if I don't see the steam coming out but I can hear it and feel it coming out of the vent pipe? My air vent cover lock(the one that pops up) will start steaming and leaking water will the vent pipe is "venting". But I never visibly see it, I can only feel it. During that 10 minute period the cover lock will actually pop up into the lock position.

What btu are you heating the canner with and for how long to reach this consistent steaming? I cannot for the life of my get this consistent steam with my AA canner. It may be consistent for 10s then it isn't visible for another 10s. I literally let the canner steam for 60m at medium heat (the dial literally read 15lbs without the weight), and it steams like crazy, but never constantly like this. Any advice?
