10 Ways to Vent a Portable Air Conditioner

Don't have a window to vent your portable AC through? Don't panic, there's 10 other ways you could accomplish the venting. The air conditioner DOES need to be vented though, the hot air that gets exhausted should either go outside, into the attic, into the crawlspace, through the wall, or in the wall if you're dealing with an inner wall. In this video I go over the different options you have if you don't have a window you can use for your portable air conditioning. Here are the various products I mentioned in the video:

Universal Slide Door Kit:
Foam Weather Stripping:
Cloth Window Kit:
Swing Window Kit:
Wall Mount With Plug:
Dryer Vent Kit:
Magnetic Vent Coupling:
Vent Hood With Screen:
Vent Hose Extension:
Vent Hose Sleeve:

I suggested getting a unit that self-evaporates but please do your own research regarding what portable AC you should get. Look through the product descriptions for phrases like "self evaporating technology", "drain free design", "auto drain function", etc. If you need some examples, the units below are all drain-free:

Black and Decker:
SereneLife:
Hisense:
Humhold:
Dreo:

I’m in Florida and use my dryer vent with a Y connector and gate. My Y connector has dryer connected and a/c unit and then both vent outside. To keep the dryer from venting into a/c connection we put in a gate. You cannot run dryer at same time as a/c unit. So the connection leading to the a/c unit has the gate, when using the dryer you close the gate, when using the a/c unit you open the gate. The a/c connection does blow hot air into the dryer because I do not have room for a gate for the dryer connection, but you can add one or put a magnetic sheet over the vent inside the dryer BUT huge warning closing or gating the dryer vent is a very BAD idea as it can cause fire if it is not vented when dryer is running. Venting thru a clogged dryer vent thru the wall that leads outside can cause a fire so make sure vent is unclogged. And if the a/c vent gate is open while dryer is running can sent lent into your a/c unit. Therefore be careful using venting methods thru any existing heat vents. Also plug your a/c unit directly into a power outlet rated for you a/c unit, if it is not supported the plug will overheat. Thank you Word of Advice TV, great video

Got one for my folks! central AC took a dump. My trusty AC guy said to do a vacum test to check for leaks was $800. Then if there was a problem with condensor or evap both would need to be changed cause refrigerant is different now….20K!!! Think he’s trying to hose us(no pun).

So we got a portable for now. SoCal summers are hot they are 86yrs old. It’s a single hose. Works well BUT hose needs to be covered for the radiant heat and also any where air can come in. At first it wasn’t working that well until we saw the central vent on the ceiling. It was drawing hot air due to the vacum produced by the unit. Plugged it up and BAM…nice cool air!!

Sorry for the long story but maybe adding my lamens $.02 can help.

Keep up the cool vids please!!!!

Bad idea about the bathroom fan, just watched a video about people leaving them on all day and the inexpensive ones overheat and actually cause fires.

I need a portable ac - this summer heatwave in SoCali 100F, is killing while working remote at home. Only have a small portal fan. 😅

I'm really surprised that you did not explain the difference in a single hose and a double hose the single hose when you're blowing the heat outside that air has to be replaced inside for the air that's flowed out so therefore it is sucking air from outside to replace the air that is blowing out so therefore you are sucking heat back into the room that you are cooling. The double hose lets you replace the air that you were blowing out with air from outside without interfering with the cooler in the room.

Any venting that is not outside of the house is likely to cause issues with mold due to humidity.

We live in Southern Florida. We own our condo with a detached one car garage. Because of this, I am unable to spend time in our garage. I am a middle aged woman going through menopause and I usually get hot very easily. I have been wanting to use the garage for some small projects that I enjoy doing. I have been talking to my husband about possibly getting a portable AC unit so I have been doing my research. Since we do live in a complex with HOA, I want it to look nice, so I enjoy watching these videos.

Great advice! This would be a great backup AC unit with a small generator in case of a power outage.

I have Whynter dual hose, what I do is use a large bath towel, wet it a lil bit with cold water, then drape it over the entire exhaust hose for an instant hose cooler, and it's free!!!

I put one of these in my commercial office space. I cut a hole in the dropped ceiling, removed the tile, passed the exhaust through, extended it and attached it to a steel girder about 12 feet from the floor. It’s been perfect for years. The windows in the building are floor to ceiling glass and don’t open.

The only time a drain hose is needed is if you use it on the dehumidifier setting only.

Hello 👋 good buddy Jay good to see you my friend well guess what I hooked up a air conditioner like that last week for my cousin rental house and they had me to vent it through one of the window panes because they are what they call six over six and i took a block out and made a filler piece out of Plexiglas..its been extremely hot and humid here i got overheated day before yesterday and I got pretty sick i was by myself and pretty far away from anyone. I had Gatorade i was drinking but it wasn't helping me as quickly as I wanted so i saw some blackberries ripe and I went over and picked a couple of handfuls and ate them and it wasn't more than fifteen minutes i felt strength come back in me and I walked out of the trail back to my truck and came home i was working for my cousin building a boat deck for a pond they have way back on the end of there property, they wasn't home at the time so i couldn't call them but thank God for blackberries must be something in them idk..I hope you all are doing well my number one best friend. Tell everybody hi 👋 for me and I love you all very much take care and God bless you all.

I have central AC, but s till use one of these for the "shoulder" hours when Solar isn't quite strong enough to power the central a/c. Works very well.
