Modding your 3DS is incredibly easy in 2025 and opens the doors to doing so many cool things! Downloading games, custom themes, ROM hacks, this is just the beginning. A windows computer is needed, along with an SD card + adapter.

Just did this today after buying a New 2DS XL yesterday from a local game store for only $208 in brand new quality, a 128gb sd micro and an usb adapter for it and followed everything to the book. thank you so much for this video omfg. the fact it’s so recent makes me feel way better. my 3ds came with a pretty large sd card (130~ gb) and luma3ds already on it and i had no idea, and im planning on modding it fully since it doesn’t have anything else like homebrew on it. i’m so excited to have more games and customization on it

Just to let people know: the 3ds can only read sd cards with the format "FAT32", which is a format mainly found in sd cards at or below 32gb. If you want a higher storage unit it needs to be formatted form "exFAT" to "FAT32" through the use of an external tools (bc you shouldn't be able to change the format by simply formatting it from the windows file explorer).

date is 3/6/2025 and this tutorial does in fact still work !!!! if you get stuck on the part at 6:41 due to the black screen not popping up don't worry you aren't alone i experienced the same issue how i fixed it was if you pressed 1 like the guy said than you probably need to press 2 instead and same thing if you pressed 2 than you need to press 1 instead (uncertain if you need to but i restarted the whole process to fix the issue and it worked best of luck)

Recently picked up a 3DS XL out of curiosity as I grew up with the DS Lite. I almost gave up trying to mod due to not finding a clear and easy tutorial. This was exactly what I was looking for and I can't thank you enough. Keep up the good work.

Unironically, the BEST tutorial I've ever watched. You showed the instructions in the clearest way possible, didn't overexplain anything, and just kept it simple. I've heard modding the 3DS systems were super easy, but I've put it off for forever since I know I'm the type of person who needs everything to be laid out crystal clear or else I won't get it. For anyone who wants to do this, it is still working till this day!! This is by far the BEST tutorial, follow the steps and go slow. I am writing this on 4/12/25 and I used a 3DS XL OLD same as the one shown in the video.

Thought I'd share two things with people in case they're stuck:
1. If your SD card is more than 32GB, then you'd not see the FAT32 option by default. I used a 3rd party tool called Rufus to format my sd card into the FAT32 format.
2. For me running the .bat file never worked on Windows 11. I was getting some registry value errors. Instead, I opened a cmd window and navigated to my SD card and instead ran the following command: "python mset9.py". This does the same function as that of the .bat file.

Guys I just did this on my old 2ds. All I had to do was order an sd card and the usb adapter off of amazon. This is a tedious process but it’s pretty easy! Thanks for the tutorial man

Even with this beautifully made video I’m terrified of doing something wrong to my 3DS. I have an old one and a new version. I would definitely do it to the new one…. I thought of just buying an already one but at the same time I want my own progress me Plaza and Nintendo ID to be on it not stranger😔. I have so many memories on my old 3DS camera so I’ll just leave that one alone, but I’m really contemplating on whether I should mod my new 3DS by myself especially so I can save money.

Holy crap, the memes were true. Thank you SO SO SO MUCH for this video. I would have had NO idea where to even start with modding a 3ds without it. You made everything so clear and concise, with no confusion. Now I can generate Pokemon with PkHex and put them into my save files via Checkpoint!
