The last thing you mentioned is actually the whole benefit of IEMS. They objectivly do the best as keeping the entire sound profile in your ear. Having any fraction of "leaks" will greatly reduce your sound stage, which is by far the most important aspect of audio when it comes to video games. IEMS also have little smol audio drivers that MOST of the time sound and perform best at 3.5mm. closed back headphones like the DT 770 try to emulate that idea of keeping all the sound in the ear, but it doesnt get close to the clarity of IEMS due to the frequencies of the bass lingering far too long in the ear cups.

TLDR the design/function of IEMS lend themselves much better to the sound stages presented from gaming and the EQ range in which footsteps usually fall under.

In ear monitors are designed for playing live on stage with many other musicians.. they changed my drumming forever in my old band... i had an expensive set and they were beyond amazing.

IEMs to my knowledge have 2 advantages
1 is that the drivers are so close to your ears and it being a cabled device means there's barely any latency and the sound you hear is clear and true
2 is that unlike most commercial headphones IEMs like most Audiophile preferred devices have a pretty flat audio balance, commercial stuff tend to have a higher low end which are the bases and a higher high ends with the mids being low usually, IEMs on the other hand makes those stay relatively flat as best as they can so the sound is more realistic, footsteps aren't muffled by other noises and the 3d audio is some of the best

IEMs are much more comfortable for me, and if the cable breaks, you can get replacement cables much cheaper. They're absolutely great especially if you are that kind of *SWEATY* gamer.

Audio engineer here, in ear monitors can definitely have its useful purposes, but it's probably not a good idea to hype them up as much as people do. There still is no comparison to a perfectly acoustic treated room and full range speakers, and for headphones an open back multi hifi driver headphones would have quality that would blow the best iems out of the water

I got the Hifiman Arya for $400 and it was worth it cuz the soundstage is not insane and very detailed too.

To anyone looking to pick these up, if you have a mini itx mobo or “cheeper” board looking into getting a dac, I got those exact IEM’s and thought they were broken but turns out my mobo skimped out of the headphone jack department
