My Mom's dad ran Normandy Beach. My Dad's Dad fought in Iwo Jima.

My mother was one of the RAF weather forecasters at RAF Chivenor in North Devon and was on duty the night of the storm on June 4th-5th. She remembered the puzzlement of the forecasters at the constant stream of high ranking RAF and Army Staff streaming into the Met Office, who wanted to be updated on the storm. They never suspected the invasion was imminent.

I was fortunate enough to take a Normandy tour a couple of years ago. While I have always understood the seriousness of WWII, being in Omaha beach and specially touring The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial was a very impactful experience. The feeling of fear in these two places is real, these soldiers, most of them still kids, gave their lives for our freedom, yes, World's freedom from the tyranny of Adolf Hitler. This is history everyone must know and understand. Today we honor our D-Day veterans, our lives would have been very different without your courage and sacrifice.

I was there on d-day celebrations in 2000. Bombers flying over and the vets in jeeps and their uniforms….i was up on the cliffs….with a good friend from Afghanistan- who escaped the taliban.. It was extremely emotional. I bought a postcard and wrote to my grandfather who served in the air force-an engineering mind he figured out how to put more bombs on the p47s….of course didn’t know this until his passing in 2006. The greatest generation. I studied in college this war more than anything as a university of Denver grad in international studies. When I was there at Normandy-I knew what it was and what it meant.thank you to the greatest generation! Long comment- sorry. Just want to put my tribute out there…thank you.
